You are a blank slate, a bundle of infinite pote<\/span><span id=\"E70\">n<\/span><span id=\"E71\">tial. I am mesmerised. I stare down at your face, crumpled and squished and blotched and perfect. Your mother is grinning from her pillow, still high on endorphins and op<\/span><span id=\"E72\">i<\/span><span id=\"E73\">oids, black hair matted and eyes half-closed in pain and joy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E74\"><span id=\"E75\">Then the nurse smears a drop of your blood onto her an<\/span><span id=\"E76\">a<\/span><span id=\"E77\">lyser and thousands of database entries flicker into life, mapping out your fate before you are even an hour old. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E78\"><span id=\"E79\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E80\"><span id=\"E81\">The Oracle has become such a ubiquitous part of our lives now \u2013 of everybody\u2019s lives \u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E83\">that<\/span><span id=\"E85\"> it is hard to imagine a time before it existed. But you belonged to the first generation to grow up under the Oracle\u2019s care. Our package from the hospital includes an introductory video which we watch when we get home, both of us plonked on the couch while Lucy rocks your bassinet with her foot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E86\"><span id=\"E87\">\u201cPhysicists believe that if we could map the exact position of every atom \u2013 every quark, every neutrino \u2013 in the se<\/span><span id=\"E88\">c<\/span><span id=\"E89\">onds following the Big Bang, we would be able to predict everything that will ever happen. We would be able to see into the future\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E90\"><span id=\"E91\">The film is in fact a recorded lecture, given in a darkened theatre by the CEO of <\/span><span id=\"E93\">Genelytics<\/span><span id=\"E95\"> himself, Blake Fox. It must have been a press event, as Fox is illuminated every few seconds by flashes of light from the camera operators squatting in front of the stage. It makes him look like a character in a stop-motion film, his <\/span><span id=\"E97\">movements<\/span><span id=\"E99\"> jerky and his round, bearded face caught in strange moments of co<\/span><span id=\"E100\">n<\/span><span id=\"E101\">tortion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E102\"><span id=\"E103\">\u201cOf course, this is purely theoretical: we will never be able to chart out the cause-and-effect of everything in the physical world. But could the same idea not be applied to pe<\/span><span id=\"E104\">o<\/span><span id=\"E105\">ple? What if we could know from birth your likelihood of suffering from any disease? And even better, what if we were able to tell you exactly what you could do throughout your lifetime to ensure that is the longest, healthiest exis<\/span><span id=\"E106\">t<\/span><span id=\"E107\">ence possible?<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E108\"><span id=\"E109\">\u201c<\/span><span id=\"E111\">Genelytics<\/span><span id=\"E113\">\u2019 Oracle makes this a reality.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E114\"><span id=\"E115\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E116\"><span id=\"E117\">We upload the Oracle\u2019s software onto our household ne<\/span><span id=\"E118\">t<\/span><span id=\"E119\">work. Your personal cloud is growing faster than you are: the few gigabytes that comprise your genetic data and health records have already been joined by terabytes of information gathered by the home appliances as we feed you, bathe you, play with you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E120\"><span id=\"E121\">Those records, we learn from Fox\u2019s lecture, along with data from millions of other individuals around the country, flow back to <\/span><span id=\"E123\">Genelytics<\/span><span id=\"E125\">\u2019 database. Here, at the nerve centre, the Oracle runs its algorithm, <\/span><span id=\"E126\">conducting an infinitely recursive analysis of the links between genetics, lifestyle and disease. But those <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p>streams flow both ways, and as more and more information cascades into the Oracle\u2019s central hub, it sends out updates to its users, providing them with empirical, personalised advice on how to live their lives to achieve the best health that their genes will allow.<\/p>\n<p id=\"E128\"><span id=\"E129\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E130\"><span id=\"E131\">By eight months you are already walking \u2013 and you are quite the explorer. You find it hysterical to run out onto the lawn when it is wet, first thing in the morning before the dew has evaporated, or right after a rain shower. You make it a few paces and then collapse into giggles and we have to carry you back indoors to dry off. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E132\"><span id=\"E133\">At fourteen months, you say your first word, \u201ctoaster\u201d, for reasons that neither of us can fathom. At eighteen months, your hair finally grows in, tight brown curls that fascinate you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E134\"><span id=\"E135\">And as you leap from one milestone to the next, we are guided by the Oracle\u2019s advice. It tells us what babies of your genetic make-up should be fed, in order to receive optimal nutrition. It analyses the sleeping patterns of thousands of other children and advises us when we should put you to bed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E136\"><span id=\"E137\">I am ashamed to say it now, but despite understanding the awesome power of the Oracle, I still doubt it. After all, who could know my daughter better than me? <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E138\"><span id=\"E139\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E140\"><span id=\"E141\">On the night of your third birthday party, we receive a message. Your mother and I are clearing up paper plates and wiping small, sticky handprints off the wall. You are in bed; you fell asleep even before your friends had left, overwhelmed by excitement and overfilled with cake. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E142\"><span id=\"E143\">My watch buzzes and I swipe the message up onto the li<\/span><span id=\"E144\">v<\/span><span id=\"E145\">ing room screen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E146\"><span id=\"E147\">\u201cNew research relevant to Sally\u2019s genomic vulnerabilities has just been published.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E148\"><span id=\"E149\">We are used to these alerts. But something in the Oracle\u2019s tone of voice this evening makes me stop picking up wra<\/span><span id=\"E150\">p<\/span><span id=\"E151\">ping paper and sit down on the couch. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E152\"><span id=\"E153\">\u201cMy algorithm has recently determined the genetic causes of a disorder called <\/span><span id=\"E155\">F\u00fcnder\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E157\"> disease. Sally\u2019s genomic data indicates that she has a 96% likelihood of developing the syndrome. I have revised her calculated life expectancy down from 98 to 24 years old. I will continue to provide guidance to ensure that Sally has the highest possible chance of living a healthy life.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E158\"><span id=\"E159\">The screen goes quiet. I look over at your mother, paused mid-movement, staring absently at the birthday card in her hand. It has a drawing of a patchwork elephant wearing a frilly party hat, with balloons tied to the end of its trunk. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E160\"><span id=\"E161\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E162\"><span id=\"E164\">F\u00fcnder\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E166\"> disease, we learn, is a rare neurodegenerative di<\/span><span id=\"E167\">s<\/span><span id=\"E168\">order that typically appears suddenly, in a person\u2019s early twenties. It causes fast deterioration of higher cognitive functioning \u2013 the first noticeable symptoms are usually a lack of impulse control and poor problem solving, progres<\/span><span id=\"E169\">s<\/span><span id=\"E170\">ing to an inability to <\/span><span id=\"E171\">learn new information and ultimately a loss of the sense of self. Patients die within 18 months of symptom onset. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E173\"><span id=\"E174\">The disorder has a complicated genetic profile, and you have almost all of the risk genes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E175\"><span id=\"E176\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E178\"><span id=\"E179\">We want a second opinion. We arrange to meet with our family GP. In the waiting room I flick through an ancient, yellowing wildlife magazine. I read the same sentence over and over, not taking anything in. Yet I still remember the photo on the cover: two macaque monkeys sit facing each other on a rock, foreheads pressed together, silhouetted by the evening sun. They are looking down at their baby, held tightly by the mother. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E180\"><span id=\"E181\">Dr Moore calls us in to his office. The entire lower half of his face is obscured by the array of screens on his desk so that we can\u2019t see his mouth move when he speaks. It gives him the unnerving impression of a ventriloquist, sans dummy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E182\"><span id=\"E183\">We tell the doctor about your diagnosis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E184\"><span id=\"E185\">\u201cLet\u2019s take a look\u201d. Dr Moore taps furiously on his keyboard. For a full two minutes he doesn\u2019t say a word, his eyes dar<\/span><span id=\"E186\">t<\/span><span id=\"E187\">ing back-and-forth between his displays. Finally, he removes his glasses and begins chewing on the arm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E188\"><span id=\"E189\">\u201cI\u2019ve consulted with the Oracle. It seems that <\/span><span id=\"E191\">She<\/span><span id=\"E193\"> has a<\/span><span id=\"E194\">l<\/span><span id=\"E195\">ready made Her recommendations to you.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E196\"><span id=\"E197\">His voice rises at the end of the sentence and I\u2019m unsure whether or not he is asking me a question. I tell him that we wanted a doctor\u2019s viewpoint. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E198\"><span id=\"E199\">Dr Moore sighs and slides his glasses back on to his nose. \u201cThe Oracle has determined the optimal lifestyle changes to institute in Sally\u2019s life based on her risk. If you follow the Oracle\u2019s instructions to the letter, then She calculates that Sally\u2019s risk of developing <\/span><span id=\"E201\">F\u00fcnder\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E203\"> will decrease by\u2026\u201d \u2013 Dr Moore glances down \u2013 \u201c\u2026up to 18%. I know that might not seem like much, but it is the only option you have to ensure that Sally has the best prospect of living a long and healthy life.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E204\"><span id=\"E205\">He stands up and walks around his desk, placing a sweaty hand on my lower back as he opens the office door to indicate it is time to go. \u201cThe Oracle represents the most s<\/span><span id=\"E206\">o<\/span><span id=\"E207\">phisticated healthcare algorithm ever created. Trust Her.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E208\"><span id=\"E209\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E210\"><span id=\"E211\">And so we put our complete faith in the Oracle\u2019s advice. Each morning we consult with <\/span><span id=\"E213\">Her<\/span><span id=\"E215\"> (if nothing else, the do<\/span><span id=\"E216\">c<\/span><span id=\"E217\">tor\u2019s use of pronouns catches on). Once every few months some new data relevant to your condition emerges from the Oracle\u2019s never-ending analysis of <\/span><span id=\"E219\">Her<\/span><span id=\"E221\"> expanding dat<\/span><span id=\"E222\">a<\/span><span id=\"E223\">base. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E224\"><span id=\"E225\">We incorporate the latest advice into your daily life. When the Oracle informs us that children who consume a hig<\/span><span id=\"E226\">h<\/span><span id=\"E227\">er-than-average number of calories have a greater chance of developing the disease, we program the kitchen appl<\/span><span id=\"E228\">i<\/span><span id=\"E229\">ances to limit your weekly intake. After we learn that lower levels of sun <\/span><span id=\"E230\">exposure seem to be related to a reduced i<\/span><span id=\"E232\">n<\/span><span id=\"E233\">cidence of <\/span><span id=\"E235\">F\u00fcnder\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E237\">, we don\u2019t let you out of the house without a hat and long sleeves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E238\"><span id=\"E239\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E240\"><span id=\"E241\">Then, when you are seven, we take you out of school. We break the news to you on a Saturday morning. You are standing in the kitchen doorway, wearing the bright orange backpack you insisted on carrying around everywhere; it is much too big for you and you would sometimes topple over with its weight, <\/span><span id=\"E243\">then<\/span><span id=\"E245\"> get cross when I stifled a laugh. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E246\"><span id=\"E247\">The latest data shows that people who experience fewer viruses as children are much less likely to develop <\/span><span id=\"E249\">F\u00fcnder\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E251\">; it has something to do with protecting the immune system. The Oracle instructs us that you must spend as little time as possible around potential sources of disease, chief amongst them being other children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E252\"><span id=\"E253\">You barely speak a word to me for the next month. I know you love your school, with its bright, colourful classrooms covered in pupils\u2019 artwork. You want to be a painter when you grow up; your teacher says you are a gifted artist. I know you have a crush on Daniel with the crew cut and wonky teeth, whose father always flirts with the younger mothers waiting at the school gates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E254\"><span id=\"E255\">But we have to do what\u2019s best for you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E256\"><span id=\"E257\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E258\"><span id=\"E259\">By the time you are ten, you are to be kept indoors whe<\/span><span id=\"E260\">n<\/span><span id=\"E261\">ever possible. The Oracle makes it clear that the pollution and high temperatures of the outside world constitute an unacceptable risk to people like you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E262\"><span id=\"E263\">You take to sitting by the bay windows in the living room, watching the squirrels chase each other up the big oak tree in the front garden. You ask me why they are still allowed to climb the tree, why the neighbour\u2019s cat can still walk through the dewy grass. Won\u2019t they also get sick? <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E264\"><span id=\"E265\">I tell you that you are special and we need to keep you safe for a while. The outdoors can be dangerous; remember the time you broke your arm in the playground? You nod a<\/span><span id=\"E266\">b<\/span><span id=\"E267\">sently, but I can see you don\u2019t really understand. You turn back to the window, eyes wet and glistening. It breaks my heart that you are not yet able to grasp the <\/span><span id=\"E269\">situation, that<\/span><span id=\"E271\"> you can\u2019t see that this is a small price to pay for the poss<\/span><span id=\"E272\">i<\/span><span id=\"E273\">bility of a full life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E274\"><span id=\"E275\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E276\"><span id=\"E277\">Around the same time, the health service announces that life expectancy has exceeded 100 years for the first time in history. This is, according to health secretary Sylvia Burley, almost entirely due to the country-wide adoption of <\/span><span id=\"E279\">Gen<\/span><span id=\"E280\">e<\/span><span id=\"E281\">lytics<\/span><span id=\"E283\">\u2019 \u201crevolutionary\u201d algorithm and personalised genomic guidance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E284\"><span id=\"E285\">Watching the news on her watch, your mother bursts into tears. I tell her that we shouldn\u2019t give up hope; that there is still a chance that you could make it that far yourself. But when she looks up I am surprised to see her smiling. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E286\"><span id=\"E287\">\u201cI know,\u201d she sniffs. \u201cI am thankful for that possibility every day. Can you imagine what our lives would be like without the Oracle? We are truly blessed.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E288\"><span id=\"E289\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E290\"><span id=\"E291\">\u201cNew research shows that a sedentary lifestyle may increase the risk of developing <\/span><span id=\"E294\">F\u00fcnder\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E296\"> in children with sim<\/span><span id=\"E297\">i<\/span><span id=\"E298\">lar genetic profiles to Sally. She must significantly increase her daily activity.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E299\"><span id=\"E300\">We install a treadmill in your room, which the Oracle pr<\/span><span id=\"E301\">o<\/span><span id=\"E302\">grams to provide you with the optimal exercise regimen. You are now a teenager, and have started picking fights with us whenever you see the opportunity. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pageBorders\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p>It is exhausting, but part of me is glad that you are no longer that mela<span id=\"E303\">n<\/span><span id=\"E304\">choly, withdrawn child. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E305\"><span id=\"E306\">To begin with, you refuse to exercise. You say that you will do nothing until we \u201creinstate some basic human rights\u201d. You have always been melodramatic. But eventually bor<\/span><span id=\"E307\">e<\/span><span id=\"E308\">dom sets in, and you grudgingly take up your workout ro<\/span><span id=\"E309\">u<\/span><span id=\"E310\">tine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E311\"><span id=\"E312\">We reward you by buying some old mystery books from the musty shop down the road where you once enjoyed spen<\/span><span id=\"E313\">d<\/span><span id=\"E314\">ing long Saturday <\/span><span id=\"E316\">afternoons<\/span><span id=\"E318\"> reading. Weeks later I find them still sitting, unopened, in the corner of your room. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E319\"><span id=\"E320\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E321\"><span id=\"E322\">One day in the height of spring, I accidentally leave your door unlocked. I come home to find you sitting silently on the lawn, legs crossed, curls swaying in the breeze, a broad smile on your face. <\/span><span id=\"E324\">A fine layer of dust coating your hair, cheeks red under the intense sun.<\/span><span id=\"E326\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E327\"><span id=\"E328\">I am beside myself. I roar at you, furious that you would so readily disobey the Oracle and put your future health at risk. In truth I am angry at myself, for failing to protect you. You are still only a child, a child who just wanted to feel the wind on her face. But in that moment I am too ashamed to admit my mistake. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E329\"><span id=\"E330\">It becomes clear that by acting as intermediaries for the Oracle, we are unnecessarily introducing human error into your care \u2013 failings that could cost you your life. So we d<\/span><span id=\"E331\">e<\/span><span id=\"E332\">cide to give the Oracle complete control over your bedroom network. She instructs your fridge to precisely follow your nutrition regime. She monitors the airflow and controls the room temperature. She turns the lights off when you are to go to sleep. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E333\"><span id=\"E334\">And eventually, <\/span><span id=\"E336\">She<\/span><span id=\"E338\"> calculates that the benefits of Her sole care outweigh the advantages of any parental input, and She shuts us out completely. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E339\"><span id=\"E340\">** <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E342\"><span id=\"E343\">It\u2019s now almost 15 years since we received that first me<\/span><span id=\"E344\">s<\/span><span id=\"E345\">sage from the Oracle. Eighteen since I held you in my arms and saw in you all that unbridled potential. Two since I last saw your face. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E346\"><span id=\"E347\">I hope that you can understand the reasons behind the sa<\/span><span id=\"E348\">c<\/span><span id=\"E349\">rifices that you\u2019ve made \u2013 that we\u2019ve all made \u2013 under the watchful eye of the Oracle. Although you may have been too young to fully comprehend it, <\/span><span id=\"E351\">She<\/span><span id=\"E353\"> has always had your best interests at heart. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E354\"><span id=\"E355\">Through everything we have done, your likelihood of su<\/span><span id=\"E356\">f<\/span><span id=\"E357\">fering from <\/span><span id=\"E359\">F\u00fcnder\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E361\"> has decreased spectacularly, down to only 80%. Where once only four of every 100 people like you would live past your twenties, now, thanks to the Or<\/span><span id=\"E362\">a<\/span><span id=\"E363\">cle, almost one-fifth survive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E364\"><span id=\"E365\">Your childhood may have been different from others\u2019 \u2013 even challenging at times \u2013 but take joy in the knowledge that the unparalleled power of the Oracle\u2019s data has guided us every step of the way. She has given you the greatest chance of leading a rich and fulfilling life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E367\"><span id=\"E368\">It is nothing short of a mi<\/span><span id=\"E369\">racle.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em><strong>Matthew Warren<\/strong> is a freelance science writer based in Oxford.
