{"id":40157,"date":"2017-10-02T11:05:10","date_gmt":"2017-10-02T10:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=40157"},"modified":"2017-09-28T11:05:43","modified_gmt":"2017-09-28T10:05:43","slug":"stephanie-moore-and-martin-billington-why-everyone-needs-tea-and-cake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2017\/10\/02\/stephanie-moore-and-martin-billington-why-everyone-needs-tea-and-cake\/","title":{"rendered":"Stephanie Moore and Martin Billington: Why everyone needs tea and cake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tea breaks are an opportunity to enjoy a piece of cake and catch up with colleagues.\u00a0 We decided to make the most of ours and take turns to share and discuss a thought-provoking concept of the week \u201ct-pot\u201d for short.<\/p>\n<p>Each session has offered a new perspective on what it means to be a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>One week someone read an extract from Henry Marsh\u2019s &#8220;Do No Harm.&#8221; Marsh\u2019s reflection on watching a child die on the same operating table that his own son had been operated on a few months earlier reminded us of the fragility of life and how, all too often, we take our lives for granted.<\/p>\n<p>Another time, discussion about Abraham Verghese\u2019s TED talk &#8220;A Doctor\u2019s Touch&#8221; helped us realise that basic human connections are being compromised because technological developments have become so central in a doctor\u2019s daily work. Verghese also said, \u201cEven when we cannot cure, we can heal.\u201d This resonated among the group, and propounded that just because we are able to do something as doctors does not mean that we always should.<\/p>\n<p>After a reading from John Berger\u2019s &#8220;A Fortunate Man&#8221;\u2013about Berger\u2019s observations of a GP working over 50 years ago\u2013we were inspired to build better relationships with our patients as a means to encourage their confessions and help with each patient\u2019s personal loneliness.<\/p>\n<p>Dannie Abse\u2019s poem &#8220;Useful Knowledge&#8221; was recited during one tea break. Hearing Abse\u2019s stark illustration of a parent\u2019s pain when understanding that their child\u2019s illness was terminal has helped those of us who have not experienced this dreadful reality when struggling to empathize.<\/p>\n<p>The rich brew of &#8220;T-pot&#8221; offerings has afforded us insights into the daily tribulations of our colleagues and patients and has equipped us with an appreciation of each others\u2019 behaviour and decision making processes.<\/p>\n<p>Taking time over tea to think about things differently can be surprising learning.
