A number of European countries, including Spain, Portugal, and France, have all\u00a0triggered alerts following record highs of over 40\u00b0C last weekend. If the health effects of heatwaves on patients, especially the most vulnerable, are worrying\u00a0the medical profession, then the insidious and evolving threat that climate change poses to public health should give cause for more pressing concern and response.<\/p>\n<p>There is clear evidence demonstrating that climate change escalates the frequency, duration, and intensity of heatwaves. Indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/nclimate\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/nclimate3322.html\">new analysis published this week<\/a> suggests that under a &#8220;business as usual scenario,&#8221; 74% of the world\u2019s population will eventually be exposed to temperatures commonly referred to as &#8220;lethal heat events&#8221; (up from 30% today).<\/p>\n<p>It is not only temperatures that have risen recently: pressure on individual ministers has steadily grown over recent weeks with\u00a0the start\u00a0of Brexit negotiations and the formation of a new government. One of the most controversial appointments saw Michael Gove return to the cabinet as the\u00a0secretary of state for environment, food, and rural affairs.<\/p>\n<p>When Theresa May, the UK prime minister,\u00a0announced that Gove would\u00a0replace Andrea Leadsom at the department for environment, food and rural affairs (Defra), rumours resurfaced about Gove\u2019s failed attempt to remove climate change from the school curriculum during his tenure as secretary of state for education. Earlier this year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/brexit-eu-regulations-michael-gove-environment-drugs-a7649041.html\">Gove criticized regulations preventing construction near protected wildlife habitats<\/a>, fuelling claims that he will work to scrap them when the UK leaves the EU. This is concerning as the UK Government still hasn\u2019t published its long-awaited 25 year plans for farming and nature.<\/p>\n<p>However, Gove\u2019s first act as environment secretary was to deny that he had ever intended to remove climate change from the national curriculum, and in a speech at the launch of the Conservative Environment Network in 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/blueandgreentomorrow.com\/environment\/michael-goves-speech-at-the-conservative-environment-network-launch-full-text\/\">he described himself as a &#8220;shy green&#8221;<\/a> and reaffirmed common scientific consensus concerning the severity of climate change\u00a0and its links to human activities.<\/p>\n<p>Going forward, what truly matters is that Defra implements robust policies to improve health and tackle climate change. One of the most critical areas overseen by Defra concerns the improvement of air quality.<\/p>\n<p>Defra\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/consult.defra.gov.uk\/airquality\/air-quality-plan-for-tackling-nitrogen-dioxide\/\">own draft air quality plan<\/a> says\u00a0that poor air quality is &#8220;the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK&#8221; and rightly discusses\u00a0the impact of air pollution on the environment.\u00a0Air pollution\u00a0is a major contributor to ill\u00a0health\u00a0in the UK, resulting in an estimated 40,000 equivalent deaths annually. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/357\/bmj.j2814\">Air pollution has\u00a0a role in many of the major health challenges of our day<\/a> and has been linked to lung cancer, asthma, stroke, and heart disease, and even to diabetes, obesity, and degenerative neurological disorders.<\/p>\n<p>The health problems resulting from exposure to air pollution have a high cost to the public, to our health services, and to business. In the UK, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/357\/bmj.j2814\">these costs add up to more than \u00a320 billion every year<\/a>. Road transport\u00a0is one of the biggest sources of pollution in the\u00a0UK, contributing to poor\u00a0air quality, noise disturbance, congestion, and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Last week for the first ever National Clean Air Day, <em>The BMJ<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/357\/bmj.j2855\">published an infographic<\/a>\u00a0showing that the vast majority of London\u2019s NHS hospitals and medical facilities are located in areas with very high levels of air pollution.\u00a0This is additional proof that more needs to be done to tackle air pollution. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/357\/bmj.j2842\">London\u2019s Mayor Sadiq Khan is implementing a series of hard-hitting measures<\/a> that other cities and towns across the country should also be able to implement.\u00a0However, without adequate funding, the measures recommended to local authorities in the air quality plan will never see the light of day.<\/p>\n<p>Health professionals across the country are expecting Defra\u2019s final air quality plan to be published on 31 July 2017. It aims to\u00a0support local action and provide leadership to tackle what is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/357\/bmj.j2814\">one of the biggest health challenges of our days.<\/a>&#8221; Air pollution and climate change are intertwined. We need policymakers who\u00a0put health at the centre of all\u00a0policies, and that includes the health benefits of tackling climate change.
