In one case, a general physician\u2019s 10 year-old child <a href=\"http:\/\/yyh.dxy.cn\/article\/496618\">was also stabbed<\/a>. Violence towards doctors is nothing new in China.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(14)61436-7\/fulltext\"><em>The Lancet<\/em><\/a> has been following the trend <a href=\"http:\/\/thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(10)61315-3\/fulltext\">for years<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1660-4601\/12\/11\/14872\">Almost 50%<\/a> of Chinese medical staff were insulted <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0142954\">during their daily work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Medical Association&#8217;s 2015 white paper on medical practice revealed that physical violence towards medical staff had increased\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmda.net\/zilvweiquan\/weiquanshengming\/2015-11-25\/15096.html\">over the previous seven years<\/a>. According to the publicly available figures online, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmda.net\/zilvweiquan\/weiquanshengming\/2015-11-25\/15096.html\">a total of 21 staff were killed from\u00a02009 to 2016<\/a>, but this\u00a0figure may be an underestimate because many were not reported for political reasons. The data show that surgeons are at the highest risk, followed by internists, general physicians, and nurses.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Whenever medical violence takes place, the <a href=\"http:\/\/ajm.sagepub.com\/content\/28\/2\/169.full\">guidelines<\/a>\u00a0available on DXY, the online forum for healthcare professionals in China, gets\u00a0more popular.\u00a0And in the wake of an attack, staff are asked to\u00a0wear bulletproof vests. Because of\u00a0the\u00a0violence, China now faces a lack of paediatricians, applications to study medicine are down, and the pass mark for the\u00a0National Higher Education Entrance Examination medical school is now lower.<\/p>\n<p>Several government departments <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhfpc.gov.cn\/yzygj\/s3590\/201409\/02d5c1f069164cf59ab9de21d5efa7a0.shtml\">have issued statements<\/a> about the issue, and in November 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_People%27s_Congress\">China&#8217;s national legislature<\/a>\u00a0defined medical violence as a crime.\u00a0But this still didn&#8217;t prevent four doctors being killed in the first half of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>One desperate Chinese doctor resorted to asking the <a href=\"https:\/\/petitions.whitehouse.gov\/petition\/help-protect-chinese-doctors-violence\">US government<\/a>\u00a0to protect him by signing a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/petitions.whitehouse.gov\/\">We the People<\/a>&#8221; White House petition\u00a0about violence against doctors in China. The\u00a0petition gained more than 6,000 signatures in less than a month, although it still falls short of the 100,000 goal needed.<\/p>\n<p>We hope the continuing concentration on Chinese medical violence in the global medical journals will wake up the authority and the people.
