They cope well with dry desert heat, choosing to stay inside during the hottest part of the day and sometimes covering themselves with blankets to keep their own body temperature below that of the air outside. Water is a precious resource: for drinking, washing, and for dowsing blankets to keep cool. You might have thought that rain would come as a relief.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s been raining heavily for a week, and this is not a blessing for the communities living in Western Sahara. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/solidaridad\/2015\/10\/22\/56286b31e2704e00138b45c0.html\">Flooding has destroyed<\/a> hospitals, schools, latrines, and precious food supplies.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Many Saharawi live in mud brick homes, which are destroyed in heavy rains; the more fortunate live in tents, which fare a little better. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/562a19706.html\">homes of an estimated 25 000 people have been destroyed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/hac\/about\/definitions\/en\/\">a humanitarian emergency<\/a>. An external stressor (the most severe rains known in 40\u00a0years) has caused material and economic losses, and serious disruption to the Saharawi community.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, this is not a story that we hear about in the news. A review (albeit not a very systematic one) of the English language media produced one result. <em>All Africa<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201510211628.html\">caution that floods may cause<\/a> \u201cskin diseases, pneumonia, and diarrhoea.\u201d Even in the Spanish, Italian, and French media, coverage is sparse. <a href=\"http:\/\/porunsaharalibre.org\/2015\/10\/italia-aprueba-una-contribucion-de-emergencia-al-acnur-por-las-fuertes-lluvias-en-los-campamentos\/#more-6755\">Italy announced on Friday that it would give \u20ac200 000<\/a>. When floods destroyed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2013\/aug\/23\/sudan-floods-worst-25-years\">an estimated 15 000 to 25 000 homes in Sudan in 2013<\/a>, the World Health Organization and Unicef set up emergency clinics to respond.<\/p>\n<p>The Saharawi <a href=\"http:\/\/newint.org\/blog\/2014\/01\/13\/remember-western-sahara\/\">are used to their story not being heard<\/a>. Their ancestors were\u00a0Berbers, Arabs, and Black Africans, who lived nomadic lifestyles. In the 1900s, they began to settle in towns in Western Sahara where there were phosphate mines, but in 1975 Morocco invaded Western Sahara. Many Saharawi were driven into the harsh Algerian desert, and others live under Moroccan occupation.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly 40\u00a0years, four to five refugee camps around Tindouf in Algeria have been <a href=\"http:\/\/globalaid.net\/initiatives\/humanitarian-aid\/saharawi-people-project\/\">home to approximately 160 000 Saharawi people<\/a> (half of the Saharawi population). The camps are democratically run and their official representatives are\u00a0called the Polisario. The religion is Islam and women have an important role in the community.\u00a0This is described as &#8220;Africa&#8217;s last colony&#8221; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saharawivoice.com\/the-people\">the struggle for self determination goes on<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A Saharawi proverb says that &#8220;you can&#8217;t reach the shade by being impatient.&#8221; The patience and resilience of these people has been sorely tested.
