The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abpi.org.uk\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry<\/a> plans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4197\">to bring in a system where healthcare professionals voluntarily<\/a> declare payments and hospitality received from drug companies.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is the subject of our latest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/theBMJ#poll-widget\" target=\"_blank\">online poll<\/a>, which, at the time of writing, has almost 85% of readers agreeing. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4197\/rr\">One reader thinks that\u00a0<em>The BMJ<\/em> could be more open<\/a> about its own acceptance of pharma cash.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It does seem rather ironic that whilst viewing this article online, the text is surrounded by adverts promoting medical products! Does <em>The BMJ<\/em> not need to consider its own position?&#8221; writes obstetrician Malcolm Griffiths in a response to the article.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>What do you think? I fail to see how so-called patient centred research is any different from other clinical research. Is it just me, or is the concept one of these Emperor&#8217;s Clothes things with attendant complex jargon?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/08\/doc_patient_communication.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-34948 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/08\/doc_patient_communication-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"doc_patient_communication\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>It\u2019s impossible to insist that staff connect emotionally with all patients, argues consultant clinical psychologist Raymond Chadwick in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h3991\" target=\"_blank\">personal view<\/a>\u00a0article, &#8220;Compassion: hard to define, impossible to mandate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>GP Ruth Evans agrees.
