Today it&#8217;s the turn of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4264\">has\u00a0issued a stark warning that the NHS is unlikely to achieve\u00a0the government&#8217;s 2020 target of \u00a322bn in efficiency savings<\/a> while maintaining the same level of service.<\/p>\n<p>CIPFA predicts that without a radical increase in spending, the government will have to charge patients to use some services, such as\u00a0GP consultations, or be forced to reduce services.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/08\/mmr_jab.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34924\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/08\/mmr_jab-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"mmr_jab\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><strong>\u2022 Changing attitudes to vaccines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4233\">new US study shows that if you want to convince vaccine\u00a0sceptics of the benefits of vaccination<\/a>, giving information about the dangers posed by communicable diseases is more effective than\u00a0trying to counter misconceptions about vaccine risks.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that\u00a0\u201cdirecting people\u2019s attention to the risks posed by not getting vaccinated, like getting measles, mumps and rubella . . . changed people\u2019s attitudes positively towards vaccination\u2014and that was for even the most sceptical participants in the study.\u201d They explain this finding by saying that \u201cit is often easier to replace an existing belief with an alternative belief rather than attempting to directly counter it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 How to clarify confusion over concept of antibiotic resistance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4219\">helpful study findings on the\u00a0public&#8217;s understanding of medicine<\/a>\u00a0comes from research commissioned by the Wellcome Trust, which found that the concept of antibiotic resistance confuses the public, with most people mistakenly believing that it is when their body becomes resistant to antibiotics. The researchers suggest that using terms such as \u201cdrug resistant infections\u201d or \u201cantibiotic resistant germs\u201d would aid the public&#8217;s comprehension .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/08\/sex_workers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34922\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/08\/sex_workers-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"sex_workers\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><strong>\u2022 Caring for sex workers\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4011\">This article provides an evidence based review of the specific health needs<\/a> of sex workers, aimed at non-specialists.\u00a0Sex workers are at higher risk of many conditions, but they\u00a0often face structural barriers to accessing care, such as restrictive hours, an inability to pay,\u00a0unwelcoming spaces, fear of arrest, and so on.\u00a0Author Michael L Rekart writes that caring for sex workers seeking health services requires knowledge, but more importantly a non-judgmental attitude too.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Kelly Brendel<\/strong> is assistant web editor for <\/em>The BMJ.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022 NHS needs urgent cash injection Barely a day seems to go by without yet another story or report spelling fresh financial doom for the NHS.
