As Owen Dyer reports, Chandra\u00a0has lost his bid to win damages from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Broadcasting Corporation <\/a>for a\u00a0documentary it broadcast in 2006 which claimed that he never conducted a raft of\u00a0published studies claiming the benefits of baby formula and vitamin pills in the\u00a0elderly.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/12\/richard_smith_2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-33037\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/12\/richard_smith_2014-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"richard_smith_2014\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>This story began to unravel in 2000 when Chandra\u00a0submitted a paper to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/thebmj\" target=\"_blank\">The BMJ<\/a><\/em> that seemed to show that his own patented brand of\u00a0multivitamins improved memory in elderly people. The level of detail in the study\u00a0raised suspicions in the <em>The BMJ<\/em> office and led to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/category\/richard-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Smith<\/a>\u00a0(pictured), who was editor in\u00a0chief at the time, giving evidence at the libel hearing in Toronto earlier this month. \u00a0His account of events makes for a fascinating\u00a0read.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4139\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> of a research study looking at the impact of chemotherapy on quality of life\u00a0near death raises the question of the\u00a0purpose this often toxic mix of drugs near the end of life. Chemotherapy made no\u00a0difference to the quality of life for many patients and was detrimental in others. The editorialists concluded: &#8220;If an oncologist suspects the death of a patient in the next six\u00a0months, the default should be no active treatment.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The BMJ<\/em> rarely carries obituaries of non-medics, but in the case of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4174\" target=\"_blank\">Evelyn Gillan<\/a> it\u00a0has made an exception. Gillan was\u00a0director of Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) from 2007 until\u00a02010 and subsequently became chief executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland.
