{"id":34862,"date":"2015-07-29T12:29:37","date_gmt":"2015-07-29T11:29:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=34862"},"modified":"2015-07-29T12:41:21","modified_gmt":"2015-07-29T11:41:21","slug":"the-bmj-today-handwashing-medicare-and-radiology-shortages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2015\/07\/29\/the-bmj-today-handwashing-medicare-and-radiology-shortages\/","title":{"rendered":"The BMJ Today: Handwashing, Medicare, and radiology shortages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A severe lack of specialist radiology training is failing children in the UK, an audit by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4118\" target=\"_blank\">Royal College<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4118\" target=\"_blank\">of Radiologists<\/a> has found.\u00a0The audit, undertaken in July this year, discovered that 35% of children\u2019s radiographs and scans were\u00a0performed by radiographers who had not received specific training in imaging children and that a\u00a0similar percentage of scans were interpreted by radiologists with less than six months\u2019 training in a\u00a0specialist paediatric centre.<\/p>\n<p>The president of the RCR, Giles Maskell, has said that \u201cthese findings are deeply concerning\u201d and that \u201cif\u00a0missed or mistaken diagnoses are to be avoided, it is essential that all hospitals taking x rays and\u00a0scans of children can access a specialist&#8217;s opinion as and when they need it.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Medicare<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/medicare1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34865\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/medicare1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"medicare\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>It was also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4112\" target=\"_blank\">revealed today<\/a> that US federal health insurance plan Medicare could massively curtail\u00a0its yearly expenditure if it were allowed to negotiate with drug makers on its own behalf, writes US correspondent Michael\u00a0McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>A new policy briefing paper, released by Marc-Andr\u00e9 Gagnon at Carleton University and Sidney\u00a0Wolfe of advocacy group Public Citizen, argues that up to $16bn could be saved if Medicare, like\u00a0Medicaid and the Veterans Benefits Administration, were able to use its purchasing power to secure\u00a0lower prices.<\/p>\n<p>But despite its financial hindrances, McCarthy also adds in an additional <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4124\" target=\"_blank\">news piece<\/a> that\u00a0Medicare\u2019s patient outcomes have considerably improved in the past two decades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Handwashing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nantasit Luangasanatip, health economist and PhD student at Mahidol University, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/handhygiene_0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-34869\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/handhygiene_0.jpg\" alt=\"handhygiene_0\" width=\"100\" height=\"65\" \/><\/a>Bangkok,\u00a0and\u00a0colleagues <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h3728\" target=\"_blank\">evaluated the efficacy<\/a> of hand hygiene promotion among healthcare workers in hospital settings in a\u00a0research paper.
