With a little one\u00a0on the way and the aim of teaching his future child how to lead a healthy lifestyle, Damon embarked\u00a0on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2840363\/An-Australian-actor-eats-healthy-low-fat-diet-60-day-developed-fatty-liver-disease-mentally-unstable.html\" target=\"_blank\">60-day experiment<\/a> to unravel the truth about sugar. However unlike other films on sugar,\u00a0which have focused on obvious high sugar content items such as soda and desserts,<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/thatsugarfilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">That Sugar Film<\/a><\/em>\u00a0focuses on foods that are perceived to be healthy. These include for example smoothies, low fat\u00a0yogurts, cereals and granola bars.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After revealing a shocking statistic that the average western diet contains about 40 teaspoons of\u00a0sugar a day, almost all of it being hidden, it doesn\u2019t take long for Damon to surpass the 40 teaspoon\u00a0mark in his new daily diet. Damon worked with a team of medical staff who monitored his health\u00a0throughout the two months, measuring his weight, blood pressure, and other health metrics.<\/p>\n<p>Despite continuing his regular exercise routine during the experiment, Damon gained 10 cm of fat\u00a0around his waist, developed mood swings and found it difficult to exercise as the days passed.<\/p>\n<p>These negative health effects of his increase sugar intake come as no surprise. In March of this year\u00a0the World Health Organization <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/news\/releases\/2015\/sugar-guideline\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">WHO call<\/a> to reduce sugar intake among adults and\u00a0children. The new guideline recommends adults and children to reduce their daily free sugar intake\u00a0to less than 10% of their total energy intake. A reduction to below 5% or roughly 6 teaspoons (25g) a\u00a0day would provide additional health benefits. The WHO recommendation is based on the analysis of\u00a0the latest research studies, which have shown that adults who consume less sugar have lower body\u00a0weight and increasing the amount of sugars in the diet is associated with weight gain.<\/p>\n<p>The new guideline is part of WHO\u2019s continued efforts to prevent NCDs such as Type 2 diabetes\u00a0worldwide. Furthermore, countries can use the recommendations to formulate their own country\u00a0specific dietary guidelines and implement public health interventions to reduce sugar consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the new sugar intake guidelines and recommendations may never fully impact those\u00a0who are at highest risk. Thus, using film as a tool for health promotion can greatly benefit those who\u00a0consume more than the daily-recommended amount. <em>That Sugar Film<\/em> can play a monumental role\u00a0by informing viewers to make better choices and inspiring them to lead a healthier lifestyle.
