Highlights\u00a0included Professor Alex Barratt\u2019s keynote address on overdiagnosis, in which he suggested that we should increasingly focus on trying to prevent too many new tests being adopted before there\u2019s clear evidence that they improve people&#8217;s health,\u00a0and use a more transparent approach to present the evidence to patients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0<\/strong>A major global discussion about how to improve the availability of and access to health research in developing countries <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hifa2015.org\/meeting-the-information-needs-of-researchers-and-users-of-health-research-2\/\">is taking place virtually between 20 July and 24 August<\/a>. The key points of the discussions will be presented and discussed at the Forum 2015 Global Forum on Research and Innovation for Health, which will take place in the Philippines in late August, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2015\/07\/20\/how-can-we-improve-the-availability-and-use-of-health-research-in-developing-countries\/\">you can find out more about this initiative in a recent blog<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/antibiotic_pills.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34793\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/antibiotic_pills-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"antibiotic_pills\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><strong>\u2022\u00a0<\/strong>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4009\">research news article reports on a study published<\/a> in the journal <em>Pediatrics,<\/em>\u00a0which shows that many parents of young children continue to have misconceptions about the appropriate use of antibiotics. The study found that the parents of children covered by Medicaid (the US government&#8217;s insurance programme for families on a\u00a0low income) were\u00a0more likely to answer questions\u00a0on antibiotic use\u00a0incorrectly than those who were commercially insured.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0<\/strong>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h3993\">news article reports that in a parliamentary inquiry<\/a>, Simon Stevens, NHS England\u2019s CEO, said that the government\u2019s target to recruit 5000 more GPs by 2020 to work in the NHS would be difficult to achieve. He said that it was necessary to make general practice a more attractive career option, as well as to decrease regional differences in terms of pulling power to attract GPs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/mark_newbold.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34794\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/mark_newbold-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"mark_newbold\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><strong>\u2022\u00a0<\/strong>Mark Newbold, a former chief executive of Heart of England NHS Trust in Birmingham,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h3895\"> is the latest doctor to be featured on BMJ Confidential<\/a>.
