I find it insulting and demeaning to have my own experience of homeopathy downgraded to an \u2018anecdote\u2019 as do the hundreds of thousands of other patients who regularly use homeopathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Europe\u2019s annual spend on homeopathy is of the order of \u20ac1bn\u2014so Day is not alone. But should patient preference trump all else?<\/p>\n<p>Should doctors recommend homeopathy? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/theBMJ#poll-widget\">Vote in our poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Urgent worries about sexual health services<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cThere is insufficient national coordination to enable local commissioners to work together in an effective way which meets the needs of service users in their area,\u201d the All Party Parliamentary Group on Sexual and Reproductive Health <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h3798\">has concluded after a review of sexual health and HIV services in England<\/a>. \u201cThis has to be addressed as a matter of urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Changes to what were integrated services under the former health secretary Andrew Lansley gave responsibility for some functions to local councils, but the restructuring occurred without setting clear lines of accountability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has led to a lack of proper oversight of the quality and outcomes delivered by commissioners,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s announcement last month that it planned to cut \u00a3200m from the public health budget in 2015-16, more than 7% of the total, alarmed the group.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/sorry2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-34747\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/sorry2-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"sorry\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/sorry2-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/sorry2.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u2022 How to say sorry<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cIt has never been entirely clear what the statutory duty of candour would achieve that the existing professional duty would not,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2015\/07\/16\/michael-devlin-duty-of-candour-make-apologising-easy\/\">writes Michael Devlin<\/a>, head of professional standards and liaison at the Medical Defence Union, in a recent blog post on thebmj.com.<\/p>\n<p>But he\u2019s quick to emphasise that \u201capologising to patients and those close to them when things go wrong is plainly the right thing to do.\u201d Apologies are acknowledgment of the situation and the beginnings of reconciliation, he says, and he gives five pointers on how to actually say sorry in practice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h3644\">Read also our recent column by David Oliver<\/a>, \u201cThe hardest word: managers and leaders should say sorry too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let us know what you think about these or any other issue by sending a rapid response on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebmj.com\">thebmj.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Richard Hurley<\/strong> is the\u00a0features and debates editor, <\/em>The BMJ<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022 Homeopathy: patients like it Our rapid response boards have been ablaze this week since we published a Head to Head debate on homeopathy.
