Hear from a British vascular surgeon who has been taking up to six weeks unpaid leave from the NHS to work in war zones, from Bosnia to Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone, Libya, Gaza, and Syria. He tells how the Islamic state is different, and why it may have become too dangerous to help.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h3596\"><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Sudanese medical college students and recent graduates,\u00a0some of them UK citizens, joining the Islamic state in Syria<\/a>\u00a0has raised concerns about the\u00a0influences students may come under while studying abroad, as well as the reliability of the international system for accrediting medical schools. Currently this relies on local governments, whose criteria vary but aren\u2019t always transparent to the international community. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h3511\">Are tighter checks in order, asks this feature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Three months of Saudi led bombings and a naval blockade <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h3549\">have brought humanitarian catastrophe to Yemen<\/a>. Most of the 26 million population lack safe drinking water, struggle for food, and only have electricity for several hours a week\u2014if at all. At least 158 medical facilities have closed down, and many of those still operating might soon follow due to shortages in water, electricity, drugs, dialysis, and doctors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/syria_refugees_border.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-34592 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/syria_refugees_border-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"syria_refugees_border\" width=\"221\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/syria_refugees_border-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/07\/syria_refugees_border.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>With 600 Syrian health workers killed and 145 tortured or executed during the ongoing war, many flee the country but then face new difficulties, including barriers that prevent them from work. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h3479\">Abbara et al write of the lost generation of Syrian doctors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Elsewhere, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h3056\/rr-3\">read a former immigration officer\u2019s views on restricting access to the NHS<\/a> for undocumented migrants, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h3468\">the BMA\u2019s position on doctors\u2019 involvement in checking immigration status<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Kristina Fi\u0161ter<\/strong> is an associate editor for The BMJ.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022 Who is taking care of civilians and fighters\u2019 medical needs in parts of Iraq and Syria taken over by the Islamic state?
