Despite the expiry of the drug\u2019s original patent, Pfizer holds a \u201csecondary use\u201d patent on the drug\u2019s most popular indication: the treatment of neuropathic pain.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h3119\/rr\">an open letter<\/a>, also just published, Berkeley Phillips, Pfizer\u2019s UK medical director, argues that Lyrica should remain partly protected from competition in order for the company to invest in research and development. \u201cWe have conducted over 50 clinical studies involving more than 12 000 patients specifically to assess the efficacy and safety profile of Lyrica for this condition alone,\u201d writes Phillips. \u201cIt is only as a result of our investment in this additional research programme that millions of patients have had access to this important treatment to help manage their pain and improve their quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/06\/shisha.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34404\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/06\/shisha-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"shisha\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u2022 Waterpipe smoking: does prevalence data underestimate true useage? A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h1991\">recent editorial in <em>The BMJ<\/em><\/a> highlights a worrying rise in waterpipe tobacco smoking, especially among adolescents and young people. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h3086\">new letter\u00a0questions the quality<\/a> of some of the epidemiological surveys underpinning the prevalence data. If anything, the trend in smoking could be even higher, says Mohammed Jawad and Christopher Millett, because of the way the survey is constructed.<\/p>\n<p>It uses a \u201cgateway\u201d question to enter the tobacco section, so that only those answering yes to the question \u201cdo you currently smoke on a daily basis,\u201d enter the waterpipe section of the survey. Many young people won\u2019t consider themselves smokers or realise that there&#8217;s tobacco in the product so will simply gloss over this section, according to the authors.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Rebecca Coombes<\/strong> is head of investigations and features.
