Kaiser had anticipated about four surgical patients a month. But a few weeks later state regulators said that managed care organisations could no longer exclude coverage for transgender care, including surgery. The clinic has guided about 700 people through the surgical process in the first two years. Surgery is just the tip of the iceberg for transgender patients, with most clinic visits for routine services that are delivered by primary care providers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/06\/older_woman_hospital.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34393\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/06\/older_woman_hospital-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"older_woman_hospital\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1136\/bmj.h3058\">Stroke care after discharge varies widely, UK audit finds<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme, led by the Royal College of Physicians, has concluded that too many areas fail to commission comprehensive post-acute stroke care, Jacqui Wise reports. It also raised concern that care home residents may be denied access to stroke rehabilitation services in some areas. A second report, expected by the end of the year, will give more detail on waiting times for treatment and its duration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/06\/alcohol_aisle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34391\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/06\/alcohol_aisle-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"alcohol_aisle\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2974\">Alcohol\u2014who is paying the price?<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\nAlcohol harm costs the UK economy more than \u00a321bn (\u20ac29bn; $32bn) a year, but the new UK government seems unlikely to prioritise public health over lobbying from the drinks industry, writes Ian Gilmore, hepatology professor at the University of Liverpool.
