Jonathan Gornall\u2019s article showed that 38 MPs received a total of \u00a360,000 of industry hospitality between the time when changes were first mooted in 2010 and the vote this year.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Examples included the Conservative peer Lord Naseby, who moved the amendment designed to scupper the government\u2019s plans, and who went to the O2 Arena in London in June last year for the first night of the Eagles\u2019 long awaited UK comeback tour, as a guest of Japan Tobacco International (JTI).<\/p>\n<p>MPs and peers declared the gifts in the register of interests, but Gornall said that some of the declarations were not as transparent as they might be, since 15 MPs listed Japan Tobacco International, only as JTI, giving the casual reader no clue to the nature of the business.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/05\/edzard_ernst1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34263\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/05\/edzard_ernst1-150x150.gif\" alt=\"edzard_ernst\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2630\">Elsewhere in <em>The BMJ<\/em>, Edzard Ernst,<\/a> who is the subject of this week\u2019s BMJ Confidential, says that the change which has had the biggest effect on his field of complementary medicine\u2014and an entirely negative one\u2014was the intervention of Prince Charles, whom he describes as \u201cthe self proclaimed \u2018enemy of the enlightenment\u2019 who advocates \u2018integrated medicine\u2019 for the NHS that, for the most part, is unmitigated quackery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Prince Charles also pops up in the news section. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2642\">A news story by Zosia Kmietowicz<\/a>, shows how Prince Charles\u2019 influence delayed the regulation of herbal medicines. Letters between the heir to the throne and government ministers, published last week, revealed that the prince wrote to Tony Blair in February 2005 about the European Union\u2019s Directive on Herbal Medicines, claiming that it was having \u201ca deleterious effect on complementary medicine sector in this country by effectively outlawing the use of certain herbal extracts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/05\/prince_charles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34264\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/05\/prince_charles-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the end of March 2005 Blair replied to Prince Charles\u2019s letter, thanking him for the \u201csensible and constructive\u201d contacts.
