These include development of new products, such as e-cigarettes,\u00a0and working with sympathetic politicians to fight tobacco controls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/smoking_info.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-33976\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/smoking_info-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"smoking_info\" width=\"238\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/smoking_info-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/smoking_info-1024x822.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/smoking_info.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a>He reminds us of powerful words from the World Health Organization: \u201cIt\u2019s important to understand that tobacco products are the only legally available products that can kill up to one half of their regular users if consumed as recommended by the manufacturer.\u201d This feature is accompanied by a series of punchy infographics that highlight just how widespread and costly tobacco use truly is.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 While smoking is still the most frequently studied form of tobacco usage, younger populations and some ethnic groups may have different patterns of usage. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2110\">This observations piece highlights recent data from the US National Youth Tobacco Survey<\/a>, telling us that for the first time teens are using e-cigarettes (\u201cvaping\u201d) more frequently than they\u2019re smoking actual cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>As the article points out, the take home message here may be more about what\u2019s in these products than who is using them: \u201cThe lack of regulations on e-cigarettes is what is shocking, not that 10% or 15% of teenagers are experimenting with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/shisha.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-33977\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/shisha-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"shisha\" width=\"194\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/shisha-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/shisha.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a>\u2022 In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h1991\">an editorial, Wasim Maziak tells us that tobacco waterpipe smoking<\/a> is also on the rise in Middle Eastern teens, at the same time as cigarette smoking has been either stable or declining globally. The waterpipe, also known as shisha, hookah, or narghile, has been associated with a unique set of health risks, including carbon monoxide poisoning.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, \u201cwaterpipe smoking is still exempt from, or flying under the radar of, most tobacco control policies.\u201d The editorial concludes that we are in need of a clear and comprehensive regulatory approach to waterpipe usage.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Smoking remains a serious health problem at the other end of the lifespan as well. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h1551\">In an individual participant meta-analysis including over 500 000 participants<\/a>, Ute Mons and authors from the Consortium on Health and Ageing: Network of Cohorts in Europe and the United States (CHANCES) show that smoking is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and mortality in older adults.
