He believes that through books we can come to a more profound appreciation of health and wellness, and of illness and death.<\/p>\n<p>Introducing the shortlist, Arnold said: \u00a0&#8220;Here are six wonderful books of both fact and fiction that offer powerful insights into the body and the mind, the practices of medicine, as well as the impact of death and suicide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The shortlisted books, as described by Bill Bryson, are:<\/p>\n<p><em><a title=\"Marion Coutts\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marioncoutts.com\/books.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Iceberg<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><a title=\"Marion Coutts\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marioncoutts.com\/books.html\" target=\"_blank\">by Marion Coutts (Atlantic)<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/iceberg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-33634\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/iceberg-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"iceberg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarion Coutts is a young artist whose husband tragically developed a brain tumour and slowly over time died. It is beautifully written, you feel almost as if you are reliving this experience with her in real time. It is an incredibly powerful book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/donoharm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-33635\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/donoharm-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"donoharm\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Do No Harm<\/em> by Henry Marsh (Weidenfeld &amp; Nicolson)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its incredibly absorbing. It talks a lot about the joys and triumphs of success but it is also unstinting in talking about the failures and the limitations of what doctors can sometimes do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Bodies of Light\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahmoss.org\/bodies-of-light\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Bodies of Light<\/em> by Sarah Moss (Granta)<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/bodyoflight.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-33636\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/bodyoflight-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"bodyoflight\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was the quality of writing that really sets this book apart. Sarah Moss is a remarkably, extraordinarily gifted novelist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/incredibleunlikenessofbeing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-33638\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/incredibleunlikenessofbeing-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"incredibleunlikenessofbeing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a title=\"The incredible unlikeness of being\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heronbooks.co.uk\/unlikely-being\/#.VQK2K_msXqU\" target=\"_blank\">The Incredible Unlikeliness of Being<em> by Alice Roberts (Heron)<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a book that gives you a lot of information t about things that we all ought to know about, but does it in a way that is thoroughly absorbing and engaging.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"My Age of Anxiety\" href=\"http:\/\/wellcomebookprize.org\/book\/my-age-anxiety\" target=\"_blank\"><em>My Age of Anxiety<\/em> by Scott Stossel (Windmill Books)<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/myageofanxiety.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-33637\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/myageofanxiety-103x150.jpg\" alt=\"myageofanxiety\" width=\"103\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a totally gripping book, at times unexpectedly hilarious. But mostly just moving and touching.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/allmypunysorrows.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-33639\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/allmypunysorrows-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"allmypunysorrows\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>All My Puny Sorrows<\/em> by Miriam Toews (Faber)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its a wonderfully uplifting, strangely moving, book that is very very funny and very likable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So are any of them any good? BMJ colleagues who have read <em>Do No Harm<\/em> have raved about it. One described Marsh\u2019s novel as \u201cgripping\u201d and said his descriptions of surgery had her on the edge of her seat, adding: &#8220;I admired Henry Marsh&#8217;s honesty about his mistakes, and how long some of the tragic results lived with him. I was also interested to discover how, as he got older, he was less keen to operate and more prepared, in certain circumstances, to let nature take its course.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another colleague was underwhelmed with <em>Bodies of Light, <\/em>saying: &#8220;To be honest I can\u2019t say that I enjoyed it, mostly because some of the characters are so vile. However, I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in the women\u2019s suffrage movement, the first female doctors and mother\/daughter relationships.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bryson is chair of the judging panel tasked with choosing a winner. Joining him on the panel are professor of cognitive development<a title=\"Uta Frith\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uta_Frith\" target=\"_blank\"> Uta Frith<\/a>, author <a title=\"Mark Haddon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.markhaddon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Haddon<\/a>, broadcaster <a title=\"Razia Iqbal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Razia_Iqbal\" target=\"_blank\">Razia Iqbal<\/a>, and barrister <a title=\"Helena Kennedy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.helenakennedy.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Helena Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The winner will be announced on Wednesday 29 April.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Navjoyt Ladher<\/strong> is a clinical editor, <em>The BMJ<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abi Rimmer<\/strong> is deputy editor BMJ Careers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What links grief, the early suffragette movement, and evolution?
