His guilty pleasure is driving fast cars and his most treasured possession is his dog, a Cockapoo called Mouse.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Harnessing technology\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/doctors_computers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-33559\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/doctors_computers-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"doctors_computers\" width=\"271\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/doctors_computers-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/doctors_computers.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/><\/a>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h1142\">If Farzana Rahman, a locum consultant radiologist, ruled the NHS<\/a> it would make better use of technology. He argues that with better technology, the days of painstakingly checking results for different patients from numerous different systems would be gone. Every hospital system follows a simple algorithm that uses observations to help identify patients\u2019 care needs, Farzana says. If observations were entered electronically, then this information could be processed automatically to give real time alerts to the relevant teams.<\/p>\n<p>Better technology would also mean that consultants could log on to tablet computers to get up to the minute information for each of their patients. Updated information on patients\u2019 location, blood results, wound hygiene, and nutritional status would mean ward rounds could be slicker, leaving more time for consultants to talk to and examine patients, he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Physician shortage\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/recruitment.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-33560\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/recruitment-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"recruitment\" width=\"240\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/recruitment-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/03\/recruitment.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h1296\">The United States faces a shortfall of between 46\u2009100 and 90\u2009400 physicians by 2025<\/a>, a report commissioned by the Association of American Medical Colleges has predicted.<\/p>\n<p>Currently,\u00a0there are about 767\u2009200 practising physicians in the US. Although US medical schools are free to add students, the number of graduate medical education slots, which are largely funded by Medicare, is capped. As a result only about 29\u2009000 physicians complete their postgraduate training each year and enter the workforce\u2014too few, the report argues, to match the growing demand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uptake of systematic reviews and meta-analyses<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h1088\">This research paper explores the extent to which systematic reviews and meta-analyses of individual participant data<\/a> (IPD) are being used to inform the recommendations included in published clinical guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>It found that systematic reviews and meta-analyses based on IPD are being under-utilised. The researchers recommend that guideline developers should routinely seek good quality and up to date IPD meta-analyses to inform guidelines.
