Rory Collins, professor of medicine and epidemiology at the University of Oxford,\u00a0does not expect the results to \u201calter the evidence,\u201d which he says strongly favours statins.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/02\/china_baby2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-33380\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/02\/china_baby2-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"china_baby2\" width=\"263\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/02\/china_baby2-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/02\/china_baby2.jpg 513w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a><strong>China:<\/strong> Illegal sex selective abortion, fuelled by the belief that only sons can provide for families, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h937\">has decreased for the sixth consecutive year<\/a>, but is still resulting in a ratio of 115.88 boys born for every 100 girls in China.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>UK politics:<\/strong> The UK government has again come under fire for the effect of its politics upon health.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h822\"> The Public Accounts Committee has said that the decision to stop direct flights to west Africa in response to the Ebola epidemic had \u201cno basis in science\u201d<\/a> and has \u201cpotentially [led] to further loss of life,\u201d while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h818\">public health leaders have told a parliamentary health committee<\/a> that \u201causterity is a really serious enemy to any [public health] prevention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research and editorial<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Joined-up care for mental and physical conditions:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h638\">Coventry and colleagues report the results of their trial<\/a> to test the effectiveness of an integrated collaborative care model for people with depression and long term physical conditions. Jane Gunn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h712\">explores this in a linked editorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research news<\/strong><br \/>\nResearch published in <em>PLOS Medicine<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h872\">shows how pedometers can help older people to become more physically active<\/a>.
