Everyone seems to be well trained and efficient when it comes to treatment, but too often this is not the case when it comes\u00a0to handling patients.<\/p>\n<p>There is little talk about the doctor-patient interaction and behaviour in the traditional MBBS curriculum in India. I can hardly remember any conversations on empathy and care\u2014either in class or on clinical rounds\u2014except a few ethics lectures conducted as a part of integration. Ironically, when we were asked why we had pursued medicine, most of our class said that they aspired to serve humanity.<\/p>\n<p>With no helpful\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iitk.ac.in\/3inetwork\/html\/reports\/IIR2007\/11-Health.pdf\">patient redressal system<\/a>\u00a0in public hospitals, there is little a patient can do apart from tolerate the behaviour of staff for the sake of treatment.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0need to inform patients about their rights and to educate doctors about the behavioural aspects of their role, which, if performed badly, can be a hindrance to healthcare.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.4172\/2161-0711.S2-002\">Patient satisfaction surveys<\/a>\u00a0can help in assessing the level of satisfaction and in identifying its predictors.<\/p>\n<p>It is time that quality in public healthcare is considered a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sph.harvard.edu\/ashish-jha\/can-quality-be-on-indias-healthcare-agenda-should-it-be\/\">necessity<\/a>.\u00a0A long term change can be brought about by focusing on undergraduate medical education. Preventive and social medicine\u2019s ambit should be expanded to include\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gme-cehat.org\/Organization\/List_Reports.aspx\">gender mainstreaming<\/a>, interpersonal skills, and contemporary issues in healthcare. Medical humanities can bring about a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/icmr.nic.in\/ijmr\/2013\/january\/27.pdf\">change<\/a>\u00a0in effective behaviour and motivate students; while the integration of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ijme.in\/~ijmein\/index.php\/ijme\/article\/view\/277\/1382\">medical ethics<\/a>\u00a0as a course module in the curriculum can teach its application in practice.
