\"debs\"<\/a>No, that isn\u2019t the latest political outpouring from Russell Brand\u2014it\u2019s the theme of two recently published papers in The BMJ<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Authors in Australia wanted to find out if the meme \u201carmchair socialist\u201d held any weight<\/a>. You know the type\u2014those people who tweet with fervour from their sofas during Question Time<\/em>, but seem to be fully reclined when the revolution comes. They attempted to test the validity of the concept of left wing \u201carmchair socialists,\u201d and whether they sit more and move less than their right wing and centrist counterparts.<\/p>\n

Those hoping that socialists succumb to the ills of a 21st century sedentary lifestyle and wipe out their vote through concurrent greed and gluttony, however, might be disappointed. That said, UKIP\u2019s Nigel Farage might well be celebrating too.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe findings refute the existence of an ‘armchair socialist’; people at the extremes of both ends of the political spectrum were more physically active, with the right wing reporting 62.2 more weekly minutes of physical activity (95% confidence interval 23.9 to 100.5), and the left wing 57.8 more minutes (20.6 to 95.1) than those in the political centre.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not so, says the Daily Mail<\/em>, who gave the authors\u2019 conclusions a slightly different spin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who hold strong right wing views do more exercise and spend less time sitting down than those at the centre or the left of the political spectrum, according to a study\u201d adding: \u201cThere may be such a thing as an ‘armchair socialist’, the study found, as centrists and left wingers spent a similar amount of time sitting down.\u201d<\/p>\n

So that\u2019s socialists dealt with, but what about the debunking of the idea of \u201cMale Idiot Theory\u201d?<\/p>\n

Newcastle University paper \u201cThe Darwin Awards: sex differences in idiotic behaviour<\/a>\u201d could be loosely summed up\u2014with plenty of caveats\u2014with the Tech Times<\/em> headline: \u201cScience Proves Male Idiot Theory is Real<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

And as Buzzfeed quipped: \u201cFinally, hard evidence to back up what we\u2019ve always suspected<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The authors analysed the recipients of the Darwin Awards<\/a> and found that they were overwhelmingly awarded to men (for those who want to know the statistical significance of this conclusion P<0.0001).\u00a0The winners of said award must have been eliminated from the gene pool and the \u201ccandidate must show an astounding misapplication of common sense,\u201d according to two of the criteria.<\/p>\n

Those who are unaware of the Christmas BMJ<\/em> tradition might have been caught blissfully unaware about the tongue in\u00a0cheek nature of some of the \u201cscientific\u201d research. Indeed, it seems some newspapers\u2014and responders\u2014missed that the \u201coutcomes\u201d need to be interpreted with the utmost caution.\u00a0(For said people, this overview in the NYT<\/em> might help<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

One blogger noted<\/a>: \u201cThe press release was widely quoted in major German newspapers so far, so it worked quite well! Either journalists don\u00b4t read studies behind press releases or they don\u00b4t get British humour. Or both.\u201d<\/p>\n

But not everyone saw the funny side\u2014with some readers even going so far as to say it was overtly sexist.\u00a0\u201cThe Editorial board of this journal needs to explain why it allowed this study to appear in BMJ<\/em> given its overt appeal to sexism against men and misandry,\u201d one Australian astrophysicist complained<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cImagine if a study was done claiming that women were not as smart as men because most of the world’s top mathematicians and physicists were men,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Steve J Deeley, a Swindon based lawyer, was similarly unimpressed<\/a>. \u201cI found the publication of this study astonishing. If a woman crashed her car because she was applying her makeup while driving, would we the take this as evidence of a trait of self-destructive vanity in all women?\u201d<\/p>\n

One peer reviewer was particularly aggrieved<\/a>. \u201cThe Editorial Board of The BMJ<\/em> needs to explain why they allowed this study to appear in The BMJ<\/em> given its overt appeal to sexism against men, poor methodology, and inappropriate language,\u201d he complained.<\/p>\n

We await a response.<\/p>\n
