By 2025, it is estimated that this number will increase to 11.4 million.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>More than <a href=\"http:\/\/canceratlas.cancer.org\/the-burden\/the-burden-of-cancer\/\">two thirds of these new cases<\/a> are predicted to occur in less developed regions, showing that cancer is not only a first world disease.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uicc.org\/convening\/world-cancer-leaders-summit\">World Cancer Leaders\u2019 Summit<\/a> is a one day, invite only event held in conjunction with the World Cancer Congress. <a href=\"http:\/\/canceraustralia.gov.au\/\">Cancer Australia<\/a>, together with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iarc.fr\/\">International Agency for Research on Cancer<\/a>, hosted a screening session at the summit that generated substantial\u00a0interest, while showcasing Australia\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/cancerscreening.gov.au\/\">successful bowel, cervical, and breast screening programs<\/a>. The session examined the case for screening\u2014taking into account local factors in countries with different income levels\u2014in an effort to replicate the high survival rates experienced in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The introduction of plain packaging on tobacco products and the use of electronic cigarettes were also hot topics, and the congress didn\u2019t miss the opportunity to spark up a lively debate during a session on the harms and benefits of e-cigarettes and their potential use in tobacco control and smoking cessation. Clearly, contention still exists over the use of the electronic inhalers, and it is evident that there is a need for further research to be undertaken.<\/p>\n<p>Another of the sessions that proved to be very popular came when award winning investigative journalist Dr Norman Swan moderated a discussion focusing on the benefits of involving consumers at all levels of cancer control. The highly interactive workshop challenged participants, while demonstrating best practice approaches to meaningful consumer engagement. Consumer engagement is an area where Cancer Australia leads the world and has developed a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerinvolvement.canceraustralia.gov.au\/\">internationally applicable resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The use of social and traditional media in raising awareness and implementing behavioral change was also a recurring topic of interest. Congress participants were shown successful campaigns from across the world; including the Canadian Cancer Society\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k3Cd2lvQlN4\">testicular cancer awareness video &#8220;Nutiquette<\/a>,&#8221; and Thai Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g_YZ_PtMkw0\">anti-tobacco &#8220;Smoking Kid&#8221; campaign<\/a>.
