These relationships are built on trust and shared clinical, academic, personal, or economic goals. Two articles\u00a0just published on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/thebmj\">thebmj.com<\/a>\u00a0explore ways to strengthen these relationships at the two ends of the spectrum of clinical practice: the clinical relationship between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g6734\">a doctor and his (the author is a man) patients<\/a>, and between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g6826\">academic researchers and healthcare entities<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g6734\">a Personal View, James Munro<\/a> tells us that a respectful relationship with patients is necessary to counteract \u201cthe arrogance of medicine,\u201d and that medical knowledge by itself does not bring insight into the challenges that our patients face. Using examples from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patientopinion.org.uk\/\">Patient Opinion<\/a>, a web forum to share patients\u2019 experiences, he describes how, in the end, patients value the personal connection with their health professionals more than their technical expertise.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship between patients and doctors, he reminds us, is built on trust that is fostered by physicians\u2019 attention to \u201csmall things\u201d (how we listen, how we behave). Social web platforms are giving a voice to patients\u2014letting them share their concerns, fears, and aspirations\u2014and as health professionals we will learn much by listening\u00a0attentively to what they say.<\/p>\n<p>The value of strong relationships in medicine goes beyond the patient-doctor dyad. Pragmatic trials\u2014clinical comparative effectiveness studies that seek to answer questions relevant to patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems\u2014require close collaboration between academics, funders of research, clinicians, and administrators of healthcare systems.<\/p>\n<p>While these \u201cstakeholders\u201d often have different goals, they can work together to answer relevant questions that directly affect patient care and clinical outcomes using existing infrastructure. Programs that foster such collaboration are important to ensure a shared vision by all players.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g6826\">a Research Methods and Reporting paper<\/a>, Karin Johnson and colleagues describe practical strategies that have led to several successful pragmatic trials, using examples of studies funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nihcollaboratory.org\/about-us\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory<\/a>\u00a0of the US <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>. These trials built upon strong partnerships, and have led to sustained scientific and clinical collaborations.<\/p>\n<p>These articles remind me that despite modern medicine\u2019s scientific discoveries, therapeutic advances, and technical wizardry, its success depends on human interactions.
