{"id":32859,"date":"2014-11-28T12:38:35","date_gmt":"2014-11-28T11:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=32859"},"modified":"2014-11-28T13:05:04","modified_gmt":"2014-11-28T12:05:04","slug":"the-bmj-today-are-gps-really-overpaid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2014\/11\/28\/the-bmj-today-are-gps-really-overpaid\/","title":{"rendered":"The BMJ Today: Are GPs really \u201coverpaid?\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/11\/abi_rimmer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-32861\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/11\/abi_rimmer-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"abi_rimmer\" width=\"139\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/11\/abi_rimmer-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/11\/abi_rimmer-736x1024.jpg 736w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 139px) 100vw, 139px\" \/><\/a>With the mainstream media <a href=\"http:\/\/careers.bmj.com\/careers\/advice\/view-article.html?id=20018643\">claiming that GPs are overpaid, whinging<\/a>, and earning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/health\/nhs\/10595090\/GPs-pay-Number-of-doctors-earning-100000-has-quadrupled-report-shows.html\">up to \u00a3200 000<\/a>, and\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulsetoday.co.uk\/home\/stop-practice-closures\/scores-of-practices-teetering-on-the-brink-of-closure\/20007384.article\">specialist press claiming that practices<\/a> around the country are closing owing to cuts, it is difficult to get a clear picture of what state UK general practice is really in.<\/p>\n<p>Writing in this week\u2019s <em>The BMJ<\/em>, the King\u2019s Fund\u2019s chief economist <a href=\"\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g6814\">John Appleby provides us with some answers<\/a>. He tells us that, although full time GP earnings increased by 42% from 2003\/4 to 2005\/6, from around \u00a395\u2009000 to over \u00a3134\u2009000, GPs\u2019 income before tax has subsequently reduced each year and is now just over \u00a3105\u2009000.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This sounds like a fair amount, but GP workload is rising and I think it is likely that GP partners who work full time, and therefore earn \u00a3105 000, will soon be in the minority.<\/p>\n<p>Appleby also tackles the question of how much of the NHS budget is spent in general practice. He says total investment in general practice during the period of the current parliament (since 2010\/11) fell by 2.5%. \u201cThis is in contrast to a real rise in total NHS spending of 4.4% since 2010-11,\u201d Appleby says.<\/p>\n<p>However, Appleby says that in the two years after\u00a0the introduction of the 2004 GP contract, there was a substantial real increase in total investment into general practice of over 27%. \u201cAnd over the whole decade from 2003, this meant that there was a real increase of nearly 20%,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Although Appleby doesn\u2019t quite answer the question posed in the title of this piece, &#8220;Is general practice in trouble?,&#8221; he does provide a clear analysis of how much funding general practice receives and how much goes into GPs&#8217; pockets.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in <em>The BMJ<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g7093\">Kim Holt is the star of BMJ Confidential<\/a>. Holt, a paediatrician, is one of a \u201crare group\u201d of NHS whistleblowers who have kept their jobs.
