{"id":32451,"date":"2014-10-03T11:02:56","date_gmt":"2014-10-03T10:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=32451"},"modified":"2015-08-03T17:12:38","modified_gmt":"2015-08-03T16:12:38","slug":"the-bmj-today-more-on-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2014\/10\/03\/the-bmj-today-more-on-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"The BMJ Today: More on climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/04\/Birte.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-31357\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/04\/Birte.jpg\" alt=\"Birte\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/04\/Birte.jpg 160w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/04\/Birte-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a>Earlier this year, <em>The BMJ<\/em>\u2019s editor in chief, Fiona Godlee, was one of 50 senior UK medical professionals to sign <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/tto\/opinion\/letters\/article4048102.ece\">a letter in the <em>Times<\/em> newspaper<\/a> about the health benefits of ending investment in fossil fuels, and diverting funds instead to alternative energy and more active forms of transport.<\/p>\n<p>On 1 October 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5945\"><em>The BMJ<\/em> published an editorial<\/a>, calling for the World Health Organization to declare a public health emergency. <em>The BMJ<\/em> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/climate-change\">campaigned about climate change<\/a> for years, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/332\/7554\/0.7\/rapid-responses\">the reactions from our readers<\/a> have been interesting\u2014indeed, as Godlee writes, \u201cWhen <em>The BMJ<\/em> started publishing articles on climate change, some readers told us to stick to our knitting.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The editorial<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/?gfe_rd=cr&amp;ei=NzgkVJDoLeyq8wfep4Ew&amp;gws_rd=ssl#q=Ebola+isn%E2%80%99t+the+only+public+health+emergency%2C+British+Medical+Journal+tells+WHO\"> has been widely covered<\/a> and prompted a particularly fierce reaction, not from our readers, but from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2777192\/Fury-medical-journal-joins-green-bandwagon-Think-tank-slams-BMJ-s-alarmist-global-warming-claims.html\">the <em>Daily Mail<\/em> newspaper<\/a>, accusing <em>The BMJ<\/em> of being needlessly alarmist. In response, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2014\/oct\/02\/daily-mail--medical-journal-bmj-global-warming-article\">the <em>Guardian<\/em> newspaper wrote<\/a>: \u201cDaily Mail reaches boiling point over medical journal&#8217;s global warming views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strengthening <em>The BMJ<\/em>\u2019s stance, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5178\">an analysis article<\/a>\u2014\u201cpure climate science,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5974\">in Fiona Godlee\u2019s words<\/a>\u2014unpicks what we know about climate change and its various components, and explains the implications for health professionals: \u201cThe precautionary principle\u2014which forms a core part of normal public health practice\u2014is important here. Put simply, it states that, should an activity raise threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relations are not fully established scientifically. Although the international climate convention refers to the precautionary principle, it seems to have been widely ignored.
