{"id":32403,"date":"2014-09-29T10:33:39","date_gmt":"2014-09-29T09:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=32403"},"modified":"2014-09-29T10:33:39","modified_gmt":"2014-09-29T09:33:39","slug":"the-bmj-today-death-talk-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2014\/09\/29\/the-bmj-today-death-talk-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"The BMJ Today: Death talk in India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/09\/deputy-chair-of-MJA-on-stage-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-32404\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/09\/deputy-chair-of-MJA-on-stage-11-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"deputy chair of MJA on stage (1)\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>How viable is a system of \u201cverbal autopsy\u201d to determine future health policy in a country where most deaths occur outside hospitals, are not attended by doctors, and are not medically certified? <a title=\"Meera Kay\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5800\" target=\"_blank\">Meera Kay<\/a>\u00a0finds out more about India\u2019s recently completed Million Deaths Study and the training of non-medical field workers to record written narratives, from families or other reliable informants in the local language, which describe the events that preceded the death.<\/p>\n<p>In a country which has around <a title=\"11m smokers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.technavio.com\/blog\/e-cigarette-market-gaining-steam-in-india\" target=\"_blank\">110 million smokers<\/a>, some of these deaths will be smoking related. Last month <a title=\"Reuters\" href=\"http:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/industry\/cons-products\/tobacco\/india-mulls-total-ban-on-e-cigarettes-as-government-panel-says-safety-not-established\/articleshow\/41223840.cms\" target=\"_blank\">an expert panel<\/a> recommended a nationwide ban on e-cigarettes, arguing that their safety has not yet been established. In the meantime, tobacco companies see a market in e-cigarettes to grow and earn huge profits in.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Doug Kamerow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5810\" target=\"_blank\">Doug Kamerow<\/a>\u00a0notices a similar trend in the US, where characters on the TV show <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> smoke e-cigarettes\u00a0to look cool. Manufacturers now pay for product placement in movies, which conventional cigarette manufacturers are not allowed to do. But despite this vigorous promotion, sales seem to be going down.<\/p>\n<p>Last week <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/leaders\/21618788-americas-health-care-system-remains-dysfunctional-it-could-be-made-better-how-fix\" target=\"_blank\">the <em>Economist<\/em> newspaper<\/a> offered US president Barack Obama some advice on how to fix his flagship healthcare reforms, a year after their botched launch.
