{"id":32390,"date":"2014-09-25T12:27:22","date_gmt":"2014-09-25T11:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=32390"},"modified":"2014-09-25T16:00:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-25T15:00:28","slug":"the-bmj-today-time-to-engage-with-politics-and-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2014\/09\/25\/the-bmj-today-time-to-engage-with-politics-and-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"The BMJ Today: Time to engage with politics and policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/09\/Emma-Parish.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-32276\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/09\/Emma-Parish.jpg\" alt=\"Emma-Parish\" width=\"180\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a>No sooner had I finished reading <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2014\/09\/24\/the-bmj-today-taking-a-global-view-of-health\/\">my colleague\u2019s blog about taking a global view of health<\/a>, than I found myself reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5457\">Jocalyn Clark\u2019s analysis<\/a>, which questions where the efforts for solutions to global health issues should be focussed. She states her case clearly: good health is interlinked with the economy and the\u00a0\u201cmedicalisation of global health problems reinforces short term thinking.\u201d She worries that the solutions to three global health concerns\u2014mental health, non-communicable disease, and universal health coverage\u2014are \u201ctilted in favour of biomedical and technical definitions\u201d to the detriment of social and political considerations.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5458\">Gavin Yamey responds<\/a>, arguing that there is a place for both a \u201chorizontal\u201d and \u201cvertical\u201d delivery of strategy in healthcare, citing Mexico\u2019s \u201cdiagonal approach\u201d to reduce child mortality as an example. He also stresses the importance of innovation contributing to improved health outcomes, highlighting that countries which embrace technology promptly can see an \u201cadditional 2% per year decline in their child mortality rate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As we&#8217;re\u00a0moving toward a general election in the UK, health will no doubt come to the front of the public consciousness. If the recent referendum in Scotland is anything to go by, people want to be well informed\u2014and most importantly involved\u2014in decisions that affect them.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret McCartney, a GP from Glasgow, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5773\">wants Scotland to \u201cmake Britain better\u201d<\/a> despite the divide in opinion on independence. She takes pride in the high turnout of voters, and wants the \u201cshamefully wide differences in life expectancy across Glasgow\u201d to motivate us \u201cto narrow the income gap and tackle social inequalities.\u201d So is this potentially a time to really engage people with health policy and shaping the future of the NHS?<\/p>\n<p>As the political party conferences begin, health is already high in the priorities. As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5864\">Adrian O\u2019Dowd reported from the Labour Party conference,<\/a> Ed Miliband has promised an increase in nurses, midwives, and care workers by 2020 if Labour are elected. It will be important to hear the ideas of the other parties, and it is possibly a time for the public, politicians, and healthcare professionals to think outside the constraints of health being delivered in a hospital or GP practice, and consider the wider implications of health on the population.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, policies such as HPV vaccination for boys in addition to girls <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5789\">are currently being debated<\/a>. Globally, there is the ongoing Ebola outbreak, which <a href=\"http:\/\/stacks.cdc.gov\/view\/cdc\/24900\">current predictions suggest<\/a> will affect <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g5866\">1.4 million people in Liberia and Sierra Leone<\/a> by January.
