Earlier this year the charity, based in Woodford, Essex, extended its premises by opening a timber-clad &#8220;garden shed&#8221; (pictured above). Inside are two consulting rooms for Great Ormond Street Hospital doctors, a music therapy room, and activity space.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"DH\" href=\"http:\/\/www.londonopenhouse.org\/london\/search\/factsheet.asp?ftloh_id=20004\" target=\"_blank\">project<\/a>\u00a0secured a\u00a0\u00a3497k Department of Health grant and attracted an additional\u00a0\u00a3160k in donations. The team had just a year to complete the building within budget. They also needed to accommodate a collection of protected trees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/09\/lullaby-factory.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-32341\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/09\/lullaby-factory-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"lullaby-factory\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Architects at\u00a0<a title=\"Studio Weave\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studioweave.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Weave<\/a>\u00a0faced a different challenge with Great Ormond Street Hospital: how to transform a landlocked exterior space, sandwiched between one modern building and its 1930s neighbour, into a fantasy landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Their solution? A\u00a0secret &#8220;<a title=\"Lullaby Factory\" href=\"http:\/\/www.londonopenhouse.org\/london\/search\/factsheet.asp?ftloh_id=19282\" target=\"_blank\">lullaby factory<\/a>&#8221; (pictured right) that can only be seen from inside, with its musical outputs accessible via a radio frequency or special listening pipes. The architectural installation includes decommissioned pipes from the hospital&#8217;s boilerhouse, and is scheduled to last for the next 15 years\u2014when the 1930s building is set to be bulldozed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/09\/museum_of_the_mind_f031212.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-32343\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/09\/museum_of_the_mind_f031212-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"museum_of_the_mind_f031212\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>South of the river at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, visitors can get a sneak preview of the <a title=\"Museum of the Mind\" href=\"http:\/\/events.londonopenhouse.org\/building\/15808\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of the Mind<\/a>. \u00a0The museum will provide a\u00a0history of mental healthcare and treatment when it opens next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/09\/westnorwood.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-32342\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/09\/westnorwood-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"westnorwood\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Further south, the \u00a314m West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre (pictured right), which opened in 2012, boasts\u00a0a 25m swimming pool, health and fitness suite and gym, dance studio, and GP and dental surgeries.
