This week, <em>The BMJ<\/em>\u2019s staff is in full swing in Lisbon, Portugal, and the occasion is the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/wp-admin\/post-new.php\">regional conference<\/a> of WONCA (The World Organization of Family doctors), which is aimed at GPs from all over Europe. Nevertheless, I\u2019ve heard the 3400 participants come from over 70 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Kamran Abbasi, <em>The BMJ<\/em>\u2019s international and digital editor, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.woncaeurope2014.org\/en\/content\/scientific-programme\/final-progrmme\/final-programme.html\">delivering a keynote lecture<\/a> on knowledge management on Friday, and I\u2019ll be participating in a panel discussion about overcoming the difficulties of publishing in medical journals, along with the editor of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bjgp.org\/\"><em>British Journal of General Practice<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and the editor of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actamedicaportuguesa.com\/\"><em>Portuguese Medical Journal<\/em><\/a>. Moreover, if you happen to be attending the conference, my colleagues Jayne Burton and Rosie Warrall will be manning <em>The BMJ<\/em>\u2019s stand and will be happy to tell you about the first ever bundled subscription of <em>The BMJ<\/em> and BMJ Learning, which will be <a href=\"http:\/\/learning.bmj.com\/learning\/info\/CME-CPD-Wonca.html\">promoted at the conference<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>GPs are trained to provide comprehensive care, aimed at meeting up to 90% of the needs of patients. But GPs often need to refer patients to the emergency department or to hospital specialists when they realise the patient\u2019s management goes beyond their level of competence. In the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g4117\">Endgames picture quiz<\/a>, Ilias Georgalas and colleagues take you through a case of a 72 year old man, who was referred by the GP to the emergency department because of a three day history of sudden, painless loss of vision affecting his right eye, with the diagnosis being central retinal artery occlusion.<\/p>\n<p>Urinary tract infections (UTI) in older adults are a common condition that GPs find in their practice pretty much every week. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/bmjpodcasts\/investigating-utis-mixdown?in=bmjpodcasts\/sets\/the-bmj-podcast#t=0:11\">most recent Talk Medicine Podcast<\/a>, Mabel Chew, a GP herself and<em> The BMJ<\/em>\u2019s practice editor, discusses the caveats of when and how to test for UTIs with Gavin Barlow, from the department of infection and tropical medicine at Hull &amp; East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.<\/p>\n<p>The World Cup is well underway now, and a few weeks ago <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2014\/06\/12\/the-bmj-today-the-world-cup-a-win-for-the-alcohol-industry\/\">I mentioned<\/a> Jonathan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/348\/bmj.g3772\">Gornall\u2019s Feature<\/a> covering the decision of the Brazilian government to end the longstanding alcohol ban in stadiums, which was influenced by FIFA.
