{"id":31818,"date":"2014-06-24T10:47:12","date_gmt":"2014-06-24T09:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=31818"},"modified":"2014-06-24T10:47:12","modified_gmt":"2014-06-24T09:47:12","slug":"the-bmj-today-what-about-the-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2014\/06\/24\/the-bmj-today-what-about-the-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"The BMJ Today: What about the patients?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2012\/08\/rich_hurley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19363\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2012\/08\/rich_hurley.jpg\" alt=\"rich_hurley\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2012\/08\/rich_hurley.jpg 160w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2012\/08\/rich_hurley-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a>\u201c<em>The BMJ<\/em> is to be applauded for taking the lead in facilitating meaningful patient partnership,\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/348\/bmj.g3726\/rr\/703170\"> posted Effy Vayena<\/a>, senior research fellow at the University of Zurich, yesterday on bmj.com in response to an Editorial by our own Tessa Richards and Fiona Godlee.<\/p>\n<p>Their Editorial, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/348\/bmj.g3726\"><em>The BMJ<\/em>\u2019s own patient journey<\/a>,\u201d described the launch of the journal\u2019s international panel of patients, patient advocates, and clinicians \u201cto help us develop a strategy to advance the \u2018patient revolution\u2019 in healthcare.\u201d The aim is to have patients truly partnering in editorial decision making\u2014in peer review, as just one example.\u00a0But Vayena thought, \u201cAn important piece of the jigsaw is underplayed in the article\u2019s articulation of the dimensions of patient participation. This is the phenomenon of patients . . . playing a leading role in initiating and conducting health research . . .<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent years, articles have appeared in reputable scientific journals that were the product of research proposals devised by and carried out by patient groups, often facilitated by online social media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat [this] is in prospect, therefore, is a patient-centred revolution that goes even deeper and has profounder implications, since it challenges the dichotomy of patient versus researcher, providing a further basis for disrupting hierarchical relations within the health domain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, we also published a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/348\/bmj.g4072\">Personal View on patient involvement<\/a> in health services. The NHS user Sarah Thornton slams those in charge for being strong on talk about patient partnership in the design and running of the health service, but weak on actually devising a process so that this can occur systematically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the strong rhetoric . . . there has been no consistent strategy for involving patients,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThe approach to enabling patients and the general public to have more say about how services are planned and developed has been piecemeal, and the bodies set up to facilitate patient involvement have been transient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ended her piece with a call for research that uses methods the commercial sector employs\u00a0to understand consumer behaviour. \u201cNow is the time to explore further whether process mapping of the patient journey can move patient involvement and empowerment beyond the hyperbole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re interested to know what you think about patient involvement, so please send us a rapid response to let us know.
