Only a disaster will trigger behaviour change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unmet contraceptive needs, overpopulation and the like are the equivalent of the deckchairs on the Titanic as it cruises toward the iceberg, because the real causes of the climate disaster are being ignored, and spurious idealogues are confusing the issue with these false arguments,&#8221; he concludes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">Clinical pharmacologist <a title=\"Michael Schachter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/348\/bmj.g2407\/rr\/693290\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Schacter<\/a> urges doctors to focus on safeguarding professional standards and refrain from &#8220;sixth form &#8216;activism.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Consultant anaesthetist <a title=\"Sammut\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/348\/bmj.g2407\/rr\/693389\" target=\"_blank\">Mario S Sammut<\/a> was similarly dismayed by Chivian\u2019s essay and argues that climate has changed throughout our planet\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>Far better, he says, to ensure our children and grandchildren are &#8220;better equipped to cope with anything that nature (and the climate) might throw at them. Anything else would be folly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chivian gets a more sympathetic hearing in <a title=\"Fi Godlee\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/348\/bmj.g2546?tab=responses\" target=\"_blank\">responses<\/a> to Fiona Godlee\u2019s accompanying <a title=\"Editor's choice\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/348\/bmj.g2546\" target=\"_blank\">editor\u2019s choice<\/a> article.<\/p>\n<p>GP <a title=\"Rachel Cottam\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/348\/bmj.g2546\/rr\/693233\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel Cottam<\/a>\u00a0says that in the face of the failure of political leadership &#8220;clinicians are ideally placed to step into the breach: even where some still prefer to put their heads in the sand, we can argue that taking action will lead to enormous health dividends, both physical and mental, as well as social returns and a reduction in health inequalities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Others put it more succinctly. Physician editor George D Lundberg writes: &#8220;As Bob Dylan wrote\/sang &#8216;When will they ever learn?&#8217; &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But Dylan neither wrote nor sang those lyrics, says<a title=\"Sam Lewis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/348\/bmj.g2546\/rr\/693303\" target=\"_blank\"> Sam Lewis<\/a>.
