Late on Friday it peaked at #3\u2014on all of Forbes\u2014and stayed on the list through Saturday. By Sunday it had 17,000 views\u2014not as viral as a YouTube cat, but a lot for two spontaneous minutes captured on iPhone by the frustrated teen\u2019s mum.<\/p>\n<p>What did she say that generated so much discussion among adults? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iVt3eHAsdK4\">See for yourself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s Morgan Gleason, daughter of e-patient Amy Gleason. Morgan was in hospital because after getting care for something else (via an infusion), she\u2019d developed aseptic meningitis. Doing her best to recover, she was exasperated at the insensitive way she was repeatedly woken up unnecessarily\u2014\u201cDon\u2019t you know I\u2019m sick?\u201d\u2014how senseless it was to ask her questions while she was groggy, and how clinicians would sneak off to talk about her, out of earshot. Her closing appeal sums it up:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am the patient. I need to know!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course patient advocates reacted to the video, standing shoulder to shoulder with her. (If you\u2019ve ever been at the bed end of the stethoscope, you know.) Then, after the initial wave of response, a second wave emerged: discussion among clinicians about whether disturbing patients is always necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Some said, \u201cWe need to!\u201d Others said, \u201cI try to allow rest, balancing with the need to monitor.\u201d One young US doctor said she\u2019d been told that \u201cwaking them up to ask about bowel movements was essential to my education.\u201d A patient replied that she enjoyed embarrassing students by asking how their BMs were doing.<\/p>\n<p>One doctor on Twitter replied, \u201cI\u2019ve gone twice today, actually.\u201d Ah, social media.<\/p>\n<p>We assume it\u2019s necessary to disturb patients\u2019 rest\u2014for their own good, of course, though if I disturbed a sick sister at home, my Mum would have been annoyed with me. Yet day after day, patient comfort takes a back seat to our clockwork execution of routine tasks.<\/p>\n<p>In such bedside moments do we even think? Is the disturbance necessary? Do we need to talk out of earshot? Sometimes, of course. But always, like numbed clockwork? Do we know the patient\u2019s wishes? Do we even ask? How often do we think about patient feelings, compared to the mindless march of our checklist?<\/p>\n<p>Which is more important:\u00a0 \u201chealthcare,\u201d or care itself?<\/p>\n<p>Last June the <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424127887324634304578537350035525538\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> reported<\/a> on hospitals who are rethinking it. One is noted that lets patients hang out a &#8220;Do Not Disturb&#8221; sign. In some, when clinicians leave the room they ask if the door should be open, closed, or in between. The patient preference is actively sought.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re a patient or clinician, can you imagine your hospital doing that? Would there be massive cultural obstacles?<\/p>\n<p>In two minutes Morgan made clear that she felt ignored for her wants and disturbed in her efforts to heal. It struck a chord with thousands.<\/p>\n<p>As we rethink medicine\u2019s priorities, dare we include patients\u2019 priorities, asking them \u201cWhat would help you feel better?\u201d Even better, can we share responsibility and authority with Morgan, and ask, \u201cHow can we help you?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An impromptu in hospital video by a 15 year old took healthcare social media by storm last week.
