{"id":26907,"date":"2013-06-06T14:45:12","date_gmt":"2013-06-06T13:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=26907"},"modified":"2013-06-06T14:45:12","modified_gmt":"2013-06-06T13:45:12","slug":"deborah-kirklin-mid-staffs-would-you-have-been-a-whistleblower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2013\/06\/06\/deborah-kirklin-mid-staffs-would-you-have-been-a-whistleblower\/","title":{"rendered":"Deborah Kirklin: Mid Staffs\u2014would you have been a whistleblower?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2013\/06\/06\/deborah-kirklin-mid-staffs-would-you-have-been-a-whistleblower\/deborahkirklin\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26908\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26908\" alt=\"deborahkirklin\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2013\/06\/deborahkirklin.jpg\" width=\"160\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a>The latest <a href=\"http:\/\/mh.bmj.com\/site\/about\/\"><em>Medical Humanities<\/em> poll<\/a> asks readers a simple but searching question: if you witnessed unaddressed failings in local healthcare provision, would you feel confident and secure enough to whistle blow?<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by a series of on-going scandals about the care, or rather lack thereof, provided to some NHS patients, the poll is <a href=\"http:\/\/mh.bmj.com\/content\/39\/1\/1.full\">linked to an editorial <\/a>asking how it is sometimes possible for appalling care to become habitual and taken for granted.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.midstaffspublicinquiry.com\/\">inquiry report makes clear<\/a>, there were many warning signs about what was happening in Mid Staffs, but because of \u201can engrained culture of tolerance of poor standards, a focus on finance and targets, denial of concerns, and an isolation from practice elsewhere,\u201d as well as professional disengagement whereby, \u201cclinicians did not pursue management with any vigour with concerns they may have had,\u201d nothing was done to improve the situation. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Our polls asks what you believe you would do, in a similar situation. So far, up to a third of respondents have said that that would not feel able to whistleblow, but the numbers are small. Which is why we\u2019re inviting <em>BMJ<\/em> readers to tell us what they think.<\/p>\n<p>For the majority of healthcare professionals, working within organisations that deliver high quality healthcare, these events and practices will feel far removed from their own. It might be comforting, therefore, to dismiss failings in Mid Staffs as something terrible, but alien, but it would be a mistake to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, each and everyone of us, working in health and social care, needs to play an active role in upholding our duty of care by subjecting what we do, and why, to a more critical gaze. But as our early findings suggest, doing so is never going to be easy option.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deborah Kirklin<\/strong> is a family physician and a teacher at University College London.
