This is my first despatch from the frontline of medical publishing.<\/p>\n<p>The registrar role has been running for 22 years and is named after the late <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/obituaries\/professor-roger-robinson-549007.html\">Professor Robinson<\/a> who was an associate editor at the <em>BMJ<\/em> for ten years. It\u2019s for one year and allows the post holder to take a break from clinical practice and develop skills in medical journalism and editing.\u00a0This sounded like an excellent opportunity to me as I\u2019ve been interested in <a href=\"http:\/\/frontierpsychiatrist.co.uk\/\">writing<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcpsych.ac.uk\/pdf\/London_Division_Newsletter_March_2011jb2.pdf\">publishing<\/a> since medical school.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Although I\u2019ve been in the job less than a week, I\u2019ve already been put to work and have written my first news article.\u00a0In the process I\u2019ve learnt that news requires short paragraphs and quotes are vital to lend a sense of currency.\u00a0<em>BMJ<\/em> style strongly discourages the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_passive_voice\">passive voice<\/a>. I also helped select letters from amongst the <em>BMJ<\/em>\u2019s many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/letters\/\">rapid responses<\/a> for inclusion in the upcoming issue.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve not worked in an office for over ten years and there are lots of differences to my previous NHS foot soldier job. Clearly I\u2019m not seeing any patients at the moment, which is a shock.\u00a0 Another big change is how central the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tavistock_Square\"><em>BMJ<\/em>\u2019s offices <\/a>are \u2013 I\u2019m used to working in the far reaches of the capital (where the riots are). It\u2019s not been a complete culture change though, as amongst many medical journalists there are also plenty of medically trained staff. I find it quite exotic that a lot of people at the <em>BMJ<\/em> work remotely, some as far away as Sydney and Boston USA.\u00a0At any meeting several people join us by phone.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll save further details of how the journal is put together for future despatches. As a final reflection, unlike stereotypical journalists I detect no evidence of a habitual heavy drinking culture here, but the coffee in the canteen is tasty, keenly priced, and frequently very strong.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Wednesday I joined the BMJ as the Roger Robinson editorial registrar.
