For many of us, this means scrambling to make our once classroom-based educational materials online-ready for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Where do we begin?<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Erin Macri joins Dr. Jackie Whittaker in the <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/bmjpodcasts\/educators-in-a-dangerous-time-effective-online-education-with-dr-jackie-whittaker-episode-423?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+bjsm%2Fpodcasts+%28Latest+from+British+Journal+of+Sports+Medicine+podcasts%29\"><em>latest BJSM podcast<\/em><\/a>\u00a0to share tips and tricks for both delivering and receiving effective, high quality online education. Her main research interests lie in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and in particular she aims to prevent and reduce the burden of knee OA in individuals following traumatic knee injury.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ONLINE TEACHING IN COVID-19 ERA RESOURCES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Jackie Whittaker<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>TIPS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Practicalities\n<ul>\n<li>Wired connection<\/li>\n<li>Good webcam<\/li>\n<li>Muting \u2013 background knowledge on the platform. Encourage instructors and students to practice or watch an instructions video, set up the platform for their personal preference prior to the first class, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Front lighting &gt; backlighting<\/li>\n<li>IT support support availability (timely)<\/li>\n<li>Test run<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>One of the most important ways in which online instruction differs from in-person instruction is that there are fewer opportunities for students to express themselves, to have a voice \u2013 there is a real possibility for miscommunication. Some key points to consider are:\n<ul>\n<li>Typically, communication moves from being in-person where there are synchronous verbal and non-verbal cues to being through email where the two persons communication don\u2019t have the benefit of the cues or having a real time conversation. This requires a different skill set.<\/li>\n<li>Effective communication will depend on well thought out questions and responses. Students need to be able to clearly state their needs.<\/li>\n<li>Instructors will often see a large increase in emails that they are receiving from students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Remind students that online discussions are not blogs or social media, and therefore students need to spend some time formulating their questions and any responses they provide (you might want to give out a few marks for quality of online posts).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Communities of Practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/2449987498652896\/\">World Confederation for Physical Therapy Network for Physical Therapist Educators<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/inbeta.uwc.ac.za\/portfolio\/covid-19-online-learning-for-physiotherapy\/?fbclid=IwAR0Ku5v5doP8nn4uek1ZOF0RcouMEcSxSrDNWH9X9lETtinGAKiQG5edn2s\">In Beta<\/a> \u2013 virtual community of physiotherapy educators who experiment with different approaches to teaching and learning, podcasts hosted by Ben Ellis from Birmingham in the UK and Michael Rowe from Cape Town, South Africa.
