Bringing together like-minded people from all over the world with a passion for sports and medicine, Medigames was first held in 1978 in Cannes, France.<\/p>\n<p>Medigames is an international week-long, annual event, promoting and celebrating the benefits of exercise for health. Benefits are demonstrated practically via sports competitions, and theoretically with a Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) Symposium. This year I was lucky enough to attend my first Medigames with a friend (and I left with many more).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2019\/12\/23\/the-world-medical-and-health-games-2019-budva\/picture1-54\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8917\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8917\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture1-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"865\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture1-2.png 939w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture1-2-300x68.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture1-2-768x173.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture1-2-640x144.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sports and Medicine: the perfect duo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sports and medicine are similar in some ways. Both benefit an individual\u2019s health, physically and psychologically. Both hold respect for everyone involved: players, opponents, spectators, and, health-care professionals, patients and the public. Both have an oath: at the opening ceremony for Medigames, an oath of fair-play was made, similar to the hippocratic oath made at my medical graduation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Games of Medigames<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Medigames is the Olympics for all health-care professionals. Many of whom don\u2019t have enough time to dedicate to training&#8211; this levels out the playing field. It allows health-care professionals to choose <em>both<\/em> competitive international sports and medicine, and not only one or the other.<\/p>\n<p>Competition varies at these games: for some individuals, this was their 20<sup>th<\/sup> Medigames, some are also training for the 2020 Olympics, while some are just trying the sport for the first time. There\u2019s really a place for everyone at Medigames!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2019\/12\/23\/the-world-medical-and-health-games-2019-budva\/picture2-27\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8918\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8918\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture2-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture2-2.png 375w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture2-2-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2019\/12\/23\/the-world-medical-and-health-games-2019-budva\/picture3-15\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8919\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8919\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture3-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"247\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sport and Exercise Medicine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Andr\u00e9 Monroche (former chairman of the French Sports Medicine Society) chaired the international SEM symposium. Themes this year included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sport and Nutrition<\/li>\n<li>Cardiovascular Fitness and Exercise<\/li>\n<li>Sports Activity and Cancer<\/li>\n<li>Pathologies related to the Practice of Sport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What can other conferences learn from Medigames?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Personally, Medigames stood out to me compared to other SEM conferences. The organisers succeeded in bringing together different nationalites and specialities, to partake in sports and deliver informative SEM presentations.<\/p>\n<p>SEM conferences can sometimes be fairly ironic- participants can end up sitting down for hours, listening to how benefical physical activity is. More recently, I see conference organisers trying to break this mould. For example: there are now stand-up friendly conferences where attendees stand up and applaud every speaker (trust me, your quadriceps notice it in the morning!). Other organizers have hosted morning runs before talks, and like in Medigames, sports tournaments for attendees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My week at Medigames<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After a parade through Budva, Medigames officially began on Sunday night. I also took part in Athletes (in Bar), explored the National Park Lovcen supporting my friends in the cross-country, and got caught-up in the fun atmosphere of the football matches. Nightly medals ceremonies were held at the games centre.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2019\/12\/23\/the-world-medical-and-health-games-2019-budva\/picture6-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8910\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8910\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture6-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2019\/12\/23\/the-world-medical-and-health-games-2019-budva\/picture8-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8912\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8912\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture8-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2019\/12\/23\/the-world-medical-and-health-games-2019-budva\/picture7-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8911\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8911\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture7-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture7-1.png 327w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture7-1-300x212.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A great place to network\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I met so many international participants, and made many new friends, who now feel like family after we celebrated together at the Medigames party (with all-inclusive buffet, drinks and DJ).<\/p>\n<p>The variety of competitors was evident on display boards- where their nationality, health-care profession, and sport of choice was highlighted. Being international brought a new dimension to the conference. Every person you meet (French eye-surgeons, Spanish traumatologists, Portuguese physical &amp; rehabilitation physicians, Australian sports pyschiarists, and many more) have something new to teach you about the health-care system in their country and the future they see for that system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2019\/12\/23\/the-world-medical-and-health-games-2019-budva\/picture88\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8916\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8916\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture88.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a> \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2019\/12\/23\/the-world-medical-and-health-games-2019-budva\/picture9-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8913\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8913\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2019\/12\/Picture9-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Afterthoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The whole idea of Medigames sounded too good to be true. The up-beat atmosphere created many joyous memories for myself, and other participants. And I\u2019m sure these memories will frequently resurface, and remind me to encourage all patients to engage in exercise.<\/p>\n<p><em>All<\/em> heath-care professionals can benefit from Medigames. I say this after enjoying a swim with a Brazilan nurse, Swiss Cardiology Professor, Moroccan Dentist and running against German, Montenegrin and Norwegian medical students (just to name a few). In addition to this,\u00a0all health-care professionals (not just sport and exercise physicians) world-wide can promote exercise to patients \u2013 and hopefully all the specialities who competed at Medigames will be more inclined to promote exercise now.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m glad I discovered this world in my final year of university, and I\u2019m looking forward to my next Medigames experience!<\/p>\n<p><strong>See you next year!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Portugal is welcoming the 41<sup>st<\/sup> Medigames on 13<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 20<sup>th<\/sup> June 2020.
