Ep #336 by BMJ talk medicine\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F455591529&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=960&#038;maxwidth=640\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I had the pleasure to review his book (to be published soon) on Football as Medicine which delves into the benefits of football on cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, osteopenia, fall (and fracture) prevention as well as cancer. Football as medicine is also discussed in relation to children (and youth), healthy ageing, the socially deprived and even in the workplace. It builds on his research over 15 years and reinforces that\u00a0Football IS Medicine. In more ways than one.<\/p>\n<p>As you&#8217;ll hear Peter reiterate, football is an intense and versatile modality that combines endurance, aerobic high-intensity interval (HIIT) and strength training for participants of all ages and skill levels. It can therefore be characterized as an all-in-one type of training with broad-spectrum fitness effects for the general population, resulting in marked positive and simultaneous effects on cardiovascular, metabolic and musculoskeletal fitness.\u00a0Peter&#8217;s holistic &#8220;Football is Medicine&#8221; model describes these effects, and many more, as you&#8217;ll see in his most recent BJSM publication (<u><a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/52\/22\/1412\">https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/52\/22\/1412<\/a><\/u>). In the below figure, these key points are outlined:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the training components of football<\/li>\n<li>the training-induced adaptations in fitness and health variables<\/li>\n<li>the link between football training stimuli to cardiovascular, metabolic and musculoskeletal fitness<\/li>\n<li>the use of football in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of non-communicable diseases<\/li>\n<li>the psychosocial elements of acute football training, also known as the \u201cFootball Fitness\u201d concept<\/li>\n<li>the long-term psychosocial training-induced effects of football<\/li>\n<li>the possibility of creating adherence to an active lifestyle through football<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2018\/12\/07\/football-is-medicine-peter-krustrups-drive-to-spread-the-message\/picture2-9\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8165\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8165 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2018\/12\/Picture2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"442\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2018\/12\/Picture2.png 974w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2018\/12\/Picture2-286x300.png 286w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2018\/12\/Picture2-768x806.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2018\/12\/Picture2-640x672.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m excited for 2019. A new year with more research, data, ideas and publications. All characteristic of Peter\u2019s work and fuelled by his powerful inner drive to get his message across. This year, Peter accepted Portugal\u2019s warm invitation to publicly display his lifelong work at FIM 2018 and next year, he will do the same in his home country.
