{"id":7371,"date":"2017-09-05T07:27:45","date_gmt":"2017-09-05T06:27:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/?p=7371"},"modified":"2017-09-05T07:44:08","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T06:44:08","slug":"invitation-fims-team-physician-advanced-course-23-26-september-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2017\/09\/05\/invitation-fims-team-physician-advanced-course-23-26-september-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Invitation to the FIMS Team Physician Advanced Course 23 &#8211; 26 September 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7373\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/09\/Snip20170904_1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/09\/Snip20170904_1-1.png 1179w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/09\/Snip20170904_1-1-300x71.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/09\/Snip20170904_1-1-768x182.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Alexandre Rebelo-Marques (<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ARebeloMarques\"><strong>@ARebeloMarques<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On behalf of the Organising Committee, I am pleased to welcome our outstanding faculty and delegates to the Best European Destination in 2017 \u2013 Porto, Portugal for the <a href=\"http:\/\/jornadassaudeatlantica.com\/cursosinfoen.php?id=41\">F<em>\u00e9d\u00e9ration Internationale de M\u00e9decine du Sport<\/em> (FIMS)<em>\u00a0Team Physician Advanced Course (TPAC). <\/em><\/a>The course will be held from 23 \u2013 26 September at the auditorium of the FC Porto Stadium right after the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jornadassaudeatlantica.com\/jornadasen.php\"><em>4t<\/em><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/jornadassaudeatlantica.com\/jornadasen.php\"><em>h<\/em><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/jornadassaudeatlantica.com\/jornadasen.php\"><em> Sa\u00fade Atl\u00e2ntica &amp; ISAKOS &amp; ESSKA International Meeting. <\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This FIMS TPAC is a result of the strategic partnership between FIMS and our Institution \u2013 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clinicaespregueiramendes.com\/\"><em>Cl\u00ednica do Drag\u00e3o, Espregueira-Mendes Sports Centre &#8211; FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence<\/em><\/a><\/span> and has already received mass attention in the sports medicine world with over:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>50 world renowned\u00a0Speakers<\/li>\n<li>20 countries represented<\/li>\n<li>70 attendees confirmed from 3 continents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As such, it promises to be another highlight in the international sports medicine calendar especially for the new generation of Team Physicians.<\/p>\n<p>The course has been granted 28 European CME credits (ECMEC<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>s) by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>). In addition to this, has received the BJSM Quality Education stamp of approval.<\/p>\n<p><b>Why is this course important?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) is a fast-growing healthcare field, allowing health workers who specialize in sports medicine to help not only athletes, but the general population too. Physical wellbeing among the general public is a growing area, too. Regular, moderate physical activity is essential for staying fit. Participating in sports, however, also carries a risk of being injured.<\/p>\n<p>In the below table, we see that about 6.2 million people are being treated annually in a hospital setting for a sports-related injury as defined by the EU IDB catalogue of sports. Of those, about 7% (402 000 cases) are admitted for further treatment. \u2018Team ball sports\u2019 account for about 42% of all (specified) hospital treated sports injuries; by specific type of ball sports the ranking is: Soccer (71%), Handball (9%), Basketball (6%), Volleyball (6%).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7377\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/09\/Snip20170904_4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"476\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/09\/Snip20170904_4.png 695w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/09\/Snip20170904_4-300x149.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Given this, the primary role of the sports medicine physician in competitive sport is the comprehensive health management of the athlete, to facilitate optimal performance along with the diagnosis and treatment of injuries and illnesses associated with exercise to improve athlete performance and prevent injuries. And, in a multidisciplinary team, working with coaches and physiotherapists, this can be a challenge. But, who\u2019s not up for a good challenge?<\/p>\n<p>We suggest that the first step to address the challenges is to be part of this group and show up in September in Porto!
