At the other end of the spectrum\u00a0there are potential pitfalls to be avoided for young athletes. Some aspects have been discussed in my previous blogs:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2017\/07\/14\/exercise-fitness-young-people-factors-contribute-long-term-health\/\">health and fitness in young people<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2017\/06\/30\/optimising-health-fitness-sports-performance-young-people\/\">\u00a0optimising health and fitness for young people<\/a>, below are\u00a0some updates.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-7327\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/07\/windsurfing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/07\/windsurfing.jpg 324w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/07\/windsurfing-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/>Supporting previous publications that exercise in young people improves cognitive and academic performance, research found that in boys, delay in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20161130\/Sedentary-lifestyle-linked-to-poor-reading-skillsc2a0in-boys.aspx\">reading skills<\/a>\u00a0was associated with high levels of sedentary time combined with low levels of exercise. Low\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ilslearningcorner.com\/2015-11-is-low-muscle-tone-interfering-with-your-childs-learning\/\">muscle tone<\/a>, associated with lack of exercise is also proposed as potential inhibitor of learning in children. Lack of physical activity, coupled with unfavourable body composition in young people is linked with adverse outcomes for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nickykeayfitness.com\/2016\/12\/01\/factors-impacting-bone-development\/\">bone development<\/a>\u00a0and cardio-metabolic disease in adults. Now there also appears to be long term consequences for cognitive ability and neuromuscular skills.<\/p>\n<p>For young people already involved in sport training, the same principles apply in that this represents the optimal time in life for\u00a0development of not only physical fitness such as CV fitness, muscular strength and endurance, but also neuromuscular skills. All these factors are important to enhance sport performance and to avoid injury. The risk of injury is more prevalent in early sport specialisation, so any strategies to minimise injury risk is important. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26517937\">periodised strength and conditioning<\/a> with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21623307\">neuromuscular training<\/a>\u00a0to reinforce the acquisition of a diverse range of motor skills. In other words to combine both health related physical fitness (eg. CV fitness) with skill related fitness (eg. co-ordination).
