At the other end of the spectrum there have been a cluster of articles outlining the pitfalls of early specialisation in a single sport.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the reports of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.activehealthykids.org\/2016\/11\/16\/comparisons-across-38-countries-6-continents-confirm-global-childhood-inactivity-crisis-offer-insights-improvement\/\">lack of physical activity<\/a>\u00a0amongst young people in Britain, this is of concern not only for their current\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nickykeayfitness.com\/2016\/11\/02\/optimising-health-and-fitness-for-young-people\/\">physical and cognitive<\/a>\u00a0ability, but has repercussions for health in adult life.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bjsmbeta.bmj.com\/content\/50\/23\/1451?etoc\">Research<\/a>\u00a0demonstrates that young people with low cardiovascular fitness have an increased\u00a0risk of developing cardiovascular disease in adult life. Conversely, the beneficial effects of weight bearing exercise in prepubescent girls\u00a0has been shown to enhance\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27838794\">bone mineral density accumulation<\/a>, which will have beneficial impact on peak bone mass. However, as I found in my longitudinal studies, the level of exercise has\u00a0to be in conjunction with an appropriate, well-balanced diet to avoid relative energy deficiency deficiency in sport (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2017\/04\/12\/young-athletes-optimal-health-part-3-consequences-relative-energy-deficiency-sports\/\">RED-S<\/a>), which can\u00a0compromise bone mineral density accumulation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7298 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/06\/nicky-young-people-300x176.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/06\/nicky-young-people-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2017\/06\/nicky-young-people.png 429w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the other end of the scale,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3658407\/\">early specialisation in a single sport<\/a>\u00a0does not necessarily guarantee long term success. Rather, this can\u00a0increase the risk of overuse injury in developing bodies, which in turn has long term consequences. Ensuring that all elements of fitness are considered may be an injury prevention strategy. I agree that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/injury-prevention-performance-enhancement-mick-hughes?trk=mp-author-card\">injury prevention can be viewed as part of optimising sports performance<\/a>, especially in\u00a0young athletes for both the present\u00a0and in the long term.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2017\/02\/07\/sleep-health-sports-performance\/\">Sleep<\/a>\u00a0is a vital element in\u00a0optimising health and fitness, especially in young people who may be tempted to look at mobiles or screens of other mobile devices which delays falling asleep by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ylmsportscience.blogspot.co.uk\/2015\/05\/recovery-light-from-smartphones-tablets.html\">decreasing melatonin production<\/a>. Sleep promotes mental freshness and physical elements such as boosting immunity and endogenous release\u00a0of growth hormone.
