New\u00a0Year\u2019s Eve 2011 was the first time I stepped off a plane in Cape\u00a0Town, South Africa. With the usual carry on plus duffel in the hold\u00a0combo. I looked like any other holiday maker to this spectacular\u00a0destination. The laptop in my\u00a0bag carried two years of research into\u00a0a topic of no interest to pretty much anyone but myself – or so I\u00a0thought. Bleary eyed after the overnight flight, I walked out into\u00a0blazing sunshine and an even brighter African adventure.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0fact that I am still here is down to some remarkable good fortune,\u00a0two very special people and a niche little movie that almost didn\u2019t\u00a0happen.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0good fortune?<\/p>\n

\"Noaxes\"That\u00a0all started at a braai (the local term for barbeque) one evening\u00a0where the topic of my research was pushed center stage courtesy of\u00a0special person #1. That he wasn\u2019t even there to kick it all off\u00a0himself didn\u2019t matter a jot. Prof\u00a0Tim Noakes MD, who is just about\u00a0as famous in South Africa as any of their elite athletes, had issued\u00a0his first public comment on the revival of that bad boy of\u00a0macronutrients – FAT.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0a moment of inspiration, I penned a note to the great man asking if\u00a0he would like to participate in a documentary on the topic. Our\u00a0initial exchange gave birth to my first documentary – Cereal Killers<\/a>.\u00a0The movie charted my own\u00a0experiment with a sugar and wheat free, high\u00a0natural fat diet for 28 days under the watchful medical eye of\u00a0Noakes. The context was simple. My fit, former elite sportsman father\u00a0had suffered a very unexpected heart attack in\u00a02010, and I just\u00a0thought to myself \u201cHow the hell did that happen… and am I next?\u201d<\/p>\n

As\u00a0I was leaving his office after our first animated discussion, Noakes\u00a0said something profound with that wicked signature smile of his.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s\u00a0cause some trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

So\u00a0we did.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0epochal scene in Cereal Killers is of course Noakes tearing out the\u00a0carb loading chapter of his endurance tome, Lore of Running. When he\u00a0did so, it sparked the old athlete in me and I knew there was much,\u00a0much more to\u00a0this low carbohydrate story.<\/p>\n

By\u00a0the time Cereal Killers released in 2013, John Yudkin\u2019s anti sugar\u00a0epic \u201cPure, White and Deadly\u201d was back in print (we had to make\u00a0do with a bootlegged PDF copy for research) and the topic was at\u00a0least raising eyebrows. A\u00a0good sign!<\/p>\n

The\u00a0good fortune never left us really. An editing delay had opened a\u00a0window of opportunity to include the brilliant Dr Peter Brukner and\u00a0his low carb, World Cup winning Aussie cricketers in the movie. When\u00a0World Ironman\u00a0Champion (AG) Sami Inkinen saw that, he contacted me\u00a0out of the blue to say he too excelled on a low carb diet. Working\u00a0with the ketogenic diet pioneer Prof Stephen Phinney, he was\u00a0metaphorically ripping out that chapter in\u00a0Lore of Running every time\u00a0he swam, biked or ran.<\/p>\n

Run\u00a0on Fat<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sami\u00a0would star in our second movie – Run on Fat – and Steve Phinney\u00a0crackled with wisdom, enthusiasm and knowledge throughout. The\u00a0athletes were emerging – albeit slowly – as advocates of lower carb\u00a0diets for myriad\u00a0reasons including faster recovery, lowered\u00a0inflammation and improved endurance performance.<\/p>\n

Phinney\u00a0also dropped a bombshell. When he had met Ancel Keys in the 1980s at\u00a0the University of Minnesota, Keys had reached in to his briefcase and\u00a0produced a paper he could not get published. That paper, which allegedly showed\u00a0that high cholesterol was not\u00a0as strongly associated with premature death as he originally thought,\u00a0would have gone some way to amending his own – and possibly everyone\u00a0else\u2019s – position on cholesterol. \u201cKeys was furious.\u201d said\u00a0Phinney.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0we wrapped Run on Fat, I wanted to know more about Keys, the legacy\u00a0he had left and the direction he may have taken with that unpublished\u00a0paper.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0answers lay in Pioppi (pop 190), a tiny Italian village two hours\u00a0south of Naples which is the UNESCO protected home of the\u00a0Mediterranean Diet. Keys, the most powerful voice in the history of\u00a0nutrition, had lived here for 30\u00a0years. His work in Pioppi ultimately\u00a0laid the foundation for the introduction of modern low fat food\u00a0policies in the 1970s, but he seemingly died an angry man. Keys’s influence had waned and he was unable to find a scientific journal to publish his updated position on cholesterol.\u00a0“It was too late. The juggernaut was unstoppable.” said Phinney.<\/p>\n

British\u00a0Cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra joined me to explore why that\u00a0happened. What we found amongst these wonderful people in a magical\u00a0environment, was remarkable. \u201cWe have a treasure\u201d said Stefano\u00a0Pisani, the local\u00a0Mayor. \u00a0He speaks the truth. That journey is\u00a0our new movie – The Big Fat Fix.<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s\u00a0Health have called it \u201cthe final word in the fight against dietary\u00a0misinformation.\u201d I hope they\u2019re right.<\/p>\n
