The attention has centred on the issue of diet &amp; weight loss (not surprisingly, fuelling a more spirited debate than the average hamstring injury article!), specifically, an <a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2015\/05\/07\/bjsports-2015-094911.short?g=w_bjsm_ahead_tab\">editorial by Dr Aseem Malhotra<\/a>, which suggests that physical activity without consideration of diet, is insufficient\u00a0in the fight against obesity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-6324 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2015\/05\/obesity-1.jpg\" alt=\"obesity 1\" width=\"298\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Some media outlets portrayed the article as driving a\u00a0nail into the coffin of physical activity as a preventative health modality, failing to mention that the editorial argued strongly that a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity a day provides a great return-on-investment for all-round health. <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/draseemmalhotra\">@DrAseemMalhotra<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\"> simply questioned the evidence-base regarding the effectiveness of <\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.5\">physical activity alone<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\"> in reducing obesity, an independent health issue in its own right. He also provides a call-to-action to \u201cbust the myth of physical inactivity and obesity,\u201d namely the misconception that if you exercise you can eat whatever you want with no health concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That article was preceded by a <a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2015\/04\/16\/bjsports-2015-094592.short?g=w_bjsm_ahead_tab\">perspective from the University of South Carolina and ACSM\u2019s esteemed Professor Steven Blair, a BJSM Senior Associate Editor<\/a>. He and two colleagues point out the imbalance in energy balance research, and call for further investigation into the concept of \u2018energy flux\u2019 in causing obesity; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gebn.org\/\">Global Energy Balance Network<\/a> is already undertaking some of this work.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Blair directy rebutted to the Malhotra editorial as a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gebn.org\/news\/home\/item\/26-physical-activity-is-not-a-myth\"> blog on the Global Energy Balance Network website<\/a> and shared this via his wide reach on Twitter (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stevennblair\">@StevenNBlair<\/a>). That blog is about to be accepted as an editorial in BJSM and it, and another relevant editorial will be in BJSM issue #15 (July) \u2013 curated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sasma.org.za\/\">South African Sports Medicine Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>So what actually works? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whilst obesity levels expand and expand, discussion around the optimal diet to reverse this trend include the practice of reducing carbohydrates and increasing fat intake. The optimal extent of these changes are also the topic of intense debate. BJSM published an editorial by Professors Noakes and Phinney on the argument for a low carbohydrate, high fat diet #LCHF. Dr Peter Brukner, (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peterbrukner\">@PeterBrukner<\/a>) a self-avowed #LCHF convert, interviewed Professor Noakes on this <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/bmjpodcasts\/high-fat-for-health\">BJSM podcast<\/a>. She provides insight into the cultural interests\u00a0that led to the normalization of high carb low fat diets, and proliferated\u00a0the\u00a0diabetes and obesity epidemic. She also explains practical, diet based,\u00a0strategies to combat these diseases.
