{"id":6204,"date":"2015-02-27T08:34:48","date_gmt":"2015-02-27T07:34:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/?p=6204"},"modified":"2015-02-27T08:34:48","modified_gmt":"2015-02-27T07:34:48","slug":"amssm-and-fifa-hold-2nd-summit-on-ecg-interpretation-in-athletes-with-top-worldwide-sports-cardiology-experts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2015\/02\/27\/amssm-and-fifa-hold-2nd-summit-on-ecg-interpretation-in-athletes-with-top-worldwide-sports-cardiology-experts\/","title":{"rendered":"AMSSM and FIFA Hold 2nd Summit on ECG Interpretation in Athletes with top Worldwide Sports Cardiology Experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Focus on scientifically driven ECG interpretation standards, developing clear guide to\u00a0the proper evaluation of ECG abnormalities in athletes and updates to Free Online\u00a0Training Program for Physicians.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2015\/02\/vector.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6206\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2015\/02\/vector.jpg\" alt=\"vector\" width=\"221\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a>SEATTLE, Wash. \u2013 In a continued effort to help physicians more accurately interpret ECG results to\u00a0improve cardiac safety in athletes and impact sudden cardiac death, the American Medical Society for\u00a0Sports Medicine and the FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Center (F<b>\u2010<\/b>MARC) are bringing together\u00a0top sports cardiology and sport medicine physicians from around the world for the 2nd Summit on ECG\u00a0Interpretation in Athletes in Seattle Feb. 26<b>\u2010<\/b>27.<\/p>\n<p>The Summit will focus on reaching agreement upon scientifically driven ECG interpretation standards,\u00a0defining clear steps in the evaluation of ECG abnormalities and making updates to free online ECG learning\u00a0modules that were designed as a result of the first ECG Summit. The 2012 Summit yielded four consensus\u00a0papers and the launch of the educational modules available on the AMSSM and British Medical Journal\u00a0learning site. To date, more than 13,000 modules have been completed by physicians from over 117\u00a0countries.<\/p>\n<p>More than 30 of the world\u2019s foremost authorities in sports cardiology and sports medicine will be part of\u00a0the Summit, which is also being supported by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and includes representatives from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Sports &amp; Exercise Council, the\u00a0European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Sports Cardiology Section and the Pediatric &amp; Congenital\u00a0Electrophysiology Society (PACES). The expert panel includes participants from 10 countries \u2013 Australia,\u00a0Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Italy, Qatar, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether an ECG is performed for screening or diagnostic purposes, physicians responsible for the\u00a0cardiovascular care of athletes must be guided by ECG interpretation standards that distinguish normal\u00a0ECG findings in athletes from ECG abnormalities requiring additional evaluation for conditions associated\u00a0with sudden cardiac death,\u201d said past AMSSM President Jonathan Drezner, MD, who is chair of the\u00a0meeting. \u201cIdeally, these standards, combined with greater physician education, will improve disease\u00a0detection and limit false<b>\u2010<\/b> positive results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2012 meeting helped establish athlete<b>\u2010<\/b> specific ECG interpretation standards dubbed the \u201cSeattle\u00a0Criteria.\u201d The 2015 Summit will update these standards based on new and emerging research to produce\u00a0an international consensus to guide ECG interpretation in athletes. Dr. Drezner, who is also director of the\u00a0UW Medicine Center for Sports Cardiology and a team physician for the University of Washington Huskies\u00a0and Seattle Seahawks, added, \u201cWe all want athletes to be safe during sports participation. The summit\u00a0represents a true scientific collaboration and commitment from the sports medicine and cardiology\u00a0communities to protect the cardiovascular health and safety in athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AMSSM is a multi<b>\u2010<\/b> disciplinary organization of sports medicine physicians whose members are\u00a0dedicated to education, research, advocacy, and the care of athletes of all ages.
