This week, we\u2019re at Cape Town to find out. Here are the highlights from the first day of the #LCHF conference.\u00a0Also, check out our <a href=\"http:\/\/sfy.co\/p07gm\">#LCHF Day 1 Storify<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time for scientific humility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2015\/02\/FullSizeRender-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6189\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2015\/02\/FullSizeRender-2.jpg\" alt=\"FullSizeRender-2\" width=\"282\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2015\/02\/FullSizeRender-2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2015\/02\/FullSizeRender-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 282px) 100vw, 282px\" \/><\/a>The opening keynote, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowcarbhighfatexperts.com\/gary-taubes.html\">Gary Taubes<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/garytaubes\">@garytaubes<\/a>), author of \u2018Why We Get Fat\u2019 and \u2018Good Calories, Bad Calories\u2019 questioned the cause for people to overeat. Taubes uprooted the current energy balance hypothesis where, \u2018too much eating and too little physical activity causes people to overeat\u2019. He planted his alternate hypothesis: &#8216;obesity is a disorder driven fundamentally by insulin and dietary carbohydrates&#8217;. Taubes proposed his solution, &#8216;to restrict the causative agent i.e. refined grains and sugars&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Obesity researcher, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowcarbhighfatexperts.com\/zoe-harcombe.html\">Zoe Harcombe<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zoeharcombe\">@zoeharcombe<\/a>), studied\u00a0the evidence behind the national dietary fat guidelines introduced over 30 years ago in the UK and US, and found that they\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/openheart.bmj.com\/content\/2\/1\/e000196.abstract\">were not supported by the RCTs<\/a>. She proposed what we really should eat: real foods and mostly animals.<\/p>\n<p>Harcombe called for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>public health authorities humility,<\/li>\n<li>economic adaptations,<\/li>\n<li>and the need to abolish conflicts of interest (showcasing conflicts of interest at the American Diabetic Association and British Nutrition Foundation).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Nutritionist, patient and doctor perspective <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowcarbhighfatexperts.com\/christine-cronau.html\">Christine Cronau<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChristineCronau\">@ChristineCronau<\/a>) talked about the fat revolution and the diet results. She explained that those who eat the most saturated fat have the healthiest bowels. Cronau questioned how food\u00a0is processed (acid forming or alkalising) in the body.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowcarbhighfatexperts.com\/jimmy-moore.html\">Jimmy Moore<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/livinlowcarbman\">@livinlowcarbman<\/a>) gave the patient perspective. He told his personal story from calorie restriction, to fat free diets and finally to the low carb, high fat diet. Moore emphasised the need to empower patients through education.<\/p>\n<p>A long standing advocate\u00a0in the #LCHF diet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowcarbhighfatexperts.com\/dr-michael-eades.html\">Dr Michael Eades<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrEades\">@DrEades<\/a>), thrashes the evidence for a low-fat diet up against the low-carb diet, and explained how he tweaked existing commercial diets to power a low carbohydrate diet for his patients. Are individualised diets the way forward?<\/p>\n<p><strong>An invitation to constructive debate\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The #LCHF convention\u00a0is an opportunity for both nutrition and scientific experts to\u00a0showcase their\u00a0research\u00a0and enrich the debate.
