Find out on October 1st, 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2014\/09\/edinburgh-mile.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6006\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2014\/09\/edinburgh-mile.jpg\" alt=\"edinburgh-mile\" width=\"146\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>The Secrets Behind High Performing Athletes<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>By\u00a0Beth Cameron, PR &amp; Communications, Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FSEM_UK\" target=\"_blank\">@FSEM_UK<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.ba-sem.co.uk\/bookings\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Walk 500 Miles\u2019 Sport and Exercise Medicine Conference 2014<\/a>, co-hosted by BASEM and the FSEM, will reveal some secrets behind elite performance in sport.<\/p>\n<p>An October 1<sup>st<\/sup> conference session will address the question: Are high performing athletes any different from the rest of us?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/about.brighton.ac.uk\/sasm\/about-us\/contacting-staff\/academic-staff\/yp26\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yannis Pitsiladis<\/a><strong>,<\/strong> Professor of Sport and Exercise Science and Director of the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science and Medicine (SESAME) at the University of Brighton, has an established track record of research into the phenomenal success of east African distance runners and sprinters from Jamaica. Professor Pitsiladis will be presenting \u2018what we know\u2019 about the Jamaican sprint phenomenon in one of the opening sessions of the conference. The biological mechanisms versus socio-economic and cultural factors affecting the Jamaican athlete\u2019s performance will be a key part of the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>This session is swiftly followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/calvinmorriss\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Calvin Morriss<\/a>, Head of Speed and Power Sports for the English Institute of Sport, speaking about the upper body requirements of athletes and how detailed biochemical analyses can help provide coaches and athletes with the means to develop highly specific training methods.
