This e-letter is in response to\u00a0Non-contact ACL injuries in female athletes: an International\u00a0Olympic Committee current concepts statement<\/strong>. Abstract<\/a> | Full Article<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This outstanding body of research is a watershed in\u00a0the fight against ACL-injuries. \u00a0This group should be richly commended\u00a0for this excellent work.<\/p>\n

The work points to (a priori) how, in the case of alpine\u00a0skiing, excessive abduction loading \/ valgus torque of the lower leg\u00a0structure relative to the upper leg (about the knee) can be truncated by\u00a0“detaching”\u00a0the imposing load from the point of load application at the playing\u00a0surface in the direction of the applied load. \u00a0E.G., if the medial load\u00a0that applies abduction to the lower leg can be “released” from the lower\u00a0leg — the abduction \/ valgus loading will dissipate. \u00a0An alpine ski-binding with this capability (via lateral heel release) will provide\u00a0this capability when the applied load is “released” (when the applied\u00a0abduction load approaches a pre-determined level that is well below the\u00a0elastic limit of the acl but which level is above that which is needed\u00a0to provide “controlled” skiing maneuvers). \u00a0Such a binding exists,\u00a0today, and a prospective intervention study should be considered to\u00a0study its merits for skiers.<\/p>\n
