Research shows that lots of different types of physical activity \u2013 walking, running, yoga, resistance training \u2013 can help, but in reality, not all activity does. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Physical activity is more than just a number of steps, or a certain amount of effort exerted. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a complex behaviour shaped by what we do, where we do it, who we do it with, and when we do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One way to understand this is by looking at the area(s) of life in which activity occurs &#8211; these are called \u2018domains\u2019. Domains include leisure-time (our own free time where we have some choice over how we spend it), work or school, transport (walking or cycling to get from place to place), or household activities such as cleaning, gardening, or caring for others. While lots of people intentionally exercise in their free time, others get their activity through jobs, chores, or commuting. This raises an important question: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is physical activity in any domain good for mental health?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3>How did the study go about this?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The authors identified all existing studies that have ever looked at links between physical activity and mental health across different life domains. They grouped the studies by domain and combined all of the studies to see the overall effect for each domain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s how to interpret the findings you\u2019ll see in the infographic<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mental health (the top figure) refers to all positive aspects of mental health like wellbeing and life satisfaction. The bottom figure includes all negative aspects like stress, depression, and anxiety. A higher number next to the diamond means a stronger connection (or association) between physical activity and mental health. A shorter line means the findings are more consistent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What did the study find?<\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leisure-time physical activity has the strongest link with mental health<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 in fact, it is the only domain where physical activity is linked to both better mental health AND reduced mental ill-health, with evidence consistent across hundreds of studies. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11738 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/09\/Domain-Specific-PA-and-MH-Infographic-2025-212x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/09\/Domain-Specific-PA-and-MH-Infographic-2025-212x300.png 212w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/09\/Domain-Specific-PA-and-MH-Infographic-2025-768x1086.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/09\/Domain-Specific-PA-and-MH-Infographic-2025-1086x1536.png 1086w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/09\/Domain-Specific-PA-and-MH-Infographic-2025-640x905.png 640w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/09\/Domain-Specific-PA-and-MH-Infographic-2025.png 1414w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Transport (like cycling to work) and household-related activity are connected with better mental health, but not with lower mental ill-health. Although the evidence is less consistent compared to leisure-time. is less consistent. Activities like gardening or cycling to work may lift mood but not necessarily provide the same protection against negative symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Physical activity during work tells a different story \u2013 it\u2019s linked to greater symptoms of mental ill-health. This doesn\u2019t mean physical activity during work is necessarily harmful, but it shows that not all movement has guaranteed benefits for mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Except for one link with lower mental ill-health, for school sport and PE, most associations are inconsistent and there are far less studies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What are the key take-home points?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not all physical activity is equal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Physical activity that you choose to do during your own free time is most likely to reduce symptoms of mental ill-health and improve mental health.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What should you do with this information?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Prioritise physical activity you actually want to do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> whatever that looks like, whether that&#8217;s dancing, hiking, swimming, or playing tennis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Don&#8217;t rely on work activity or household chores alone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to support your mental wellbeing \u2013 make time for movement you enjoy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read the full paper <a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2025\/08\/30\/bjsports-2025-109806\">here<\/a>!<!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why is the study important?
