Click <a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/59\/6\/367.info\">here<\/a> for the full paper.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Why is this study important?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you rarely see Black researchers in prominent positions in Sports Science and Sports Medicine, this study helps explain part of the reason why. Recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, our study examines the under-representation of Black authors in high-impact journals within these fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This under-representation is not just a matter of statistics\u2014it reflects a deeper systemic issue. Science thrives on diverse perspectives, and when an entire group is systematically excluded, we compromise the breadth and quality of our collective knowledge. Limited representation impacts access, opportunities, and ultimately, the research itself. How can we expect racial issues to be adequately addressed if those who experience them firsthand are absent from the academic conversation?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How did the study go about this?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To assess the extent of Black underrepresentation in Sports Science and Sports Medicine, we analyzed the authorship of articles published between 2018 and 2022 in the four highest-impact journals in the field:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">British Journal of Sports Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Journal of Sport and Health Science<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sports Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercise Immunology Review<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We examined 11,158 authorships to determine how many of these researchers were Black. To establish racial identity, we used publicly available images from academic platforms such as Google Scholar and ResearchGate, as well as institutional websites and social media profiles. We used recognized heteroidentification methods commonly used in Brazil, which rely on phenotypic traits including skin color, facial structure, nose width, lip thickness, eyebrow density, eye shape, and hair texture.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What did the study find?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The underrepresentation of Black researchers in Sports Science and Sports Medicine is alarming.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Among the authors:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of the 11,158 authors analyzed across the four journals, only <\/span><b>1.30% were Black<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The gender breakdown worsens the scenario: only <\/span><b>0.34% were Black women<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In leadership positions (first and last author), a mere <\/span><b>0.92% of first authors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>1.09% of last authors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were Black, indicating that their presence in leadership roles is also minimal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Among the journals:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only <\/span><b>0.75% of articles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> had two or more Black researchers. Even over the analyzed periods (2018\u20132020 and 2021\u20132022), the increase in Black authorship remained minimal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, the study highlights that this under-representation is driven by structural factors, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Systemic racism in academia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which restricts Black researchers&#8217; access to opportunities and collaboration networks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Inequality in research funding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with less access to grants and resources for conducting studies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Barriers to academic progression<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, stemming from a lack of role models and institutional barriers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Language barriers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as English is the dominant language in scientific publishing, and fluency is not equally accessible to all researchers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What are the key take-home points?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sports Science and Sports Medicine still have a long way to go to become more inclusive. Here are some key considerations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Black representation in science remains critically low.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only <\/span><b>1.30%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of authors were Black, with Black women representing an even smaller fraction (<\/span><b>0.34%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Without role models, future generations may feel discouraged from pursuing academia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>The issue is structural and multifactorial.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Systemic racism, funding challenges, language barriers, and exclusion from academic networks collectively hinders the representation of Black scientists.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moreover, the lack of diversity in selection committees perpetuates this cycle of exclusion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Concrete changes are necessary to transform this reality.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Affirmative policies, mentorship initiatives, and financial support are some proposed solutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">International journals must take active steps to promote diversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-11606\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/05\/Examining-the-under-representation-of-black-researchers-in-sports-science-and-sports-medicine-150x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"1046\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/05\/Examining-the-under-representation-of-black-researchers-in-sports-science-and-sports-medicine-150x300.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/05\/Examining-the-under-representation-of-black-researchers-in-sports-science-and-sports-medicine-768x1536.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/05\/Examining-the-under-representation-of-black-researchers-in-sports-science-and-sports-medicine-640x1280.png 640w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2025\/05\/Examining-the-under-representation-of-black-researchers-in-sports-science-and-sports-medicine.png 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This blog provides a summary of a recent paper published in BJSM.
