Part one and part two also summarised how this relationship is significant in assessing an injury and planning, prioritising and programming the rehabilitation to guide the athlete to a return to performance. The rehabilitation process is an opportunity that leads to personal and physical growth for the athlete involved. Each discipline (e.g. physiotherapy, S&amp;C, nutrition, sports medicine, sports psychology etc) will have a greater level of input at varying stages of the process, but will all be vital in the collective efforts of executing and delivering the programme. Having clarity on the key roles and responsibilities of each discipline in the inter-disciplinary team assists in cohesive delivery of the programme. In particular the physiotherapist and S&amp;C coach relationship. These roles and some of the responsibilities are highlighted in Figure 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11177\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2024\/07\/Strength-part-3-image-5-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2024\/07\/Strength-part-3-image-5-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2024\/07\/Strength-part-3-image-5.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Figure 3:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Individual practitioner responsibilities\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Everyone has a part to play:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A\u00a0 practitioners\u2019 level of input may differ during the stage of rehabilitation (Figure 4).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11176\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2024\/07\/Strength-part-3-image-3-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2024\/07\/Strength-part-3-image-3-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2024\/07\/Strength-part-3-image-3.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Figure 4:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Rehabilitation stages pyramid\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whilst an athlete is going through the \u2018protection and preservation\u2019 phase of an injury, the physiotherapist and S&amp;C coach will have more involvement than the coaching staff. Whereas during the \u2018enhancement \u2019and \u2018performance\u2019\u00a0 phases of the rehabilitation, coaching staff will take on a much greater role than before. Figure 5 demonstrates how the level of input differs across the rehabilitation programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br style=\"font-weight: 400\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11178\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2024\/07\/Strength-part-3-image-4-300x175.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2024\/07\/Strength-part-3-image-4-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/files\/2024\/07\/Strength-part-3-image-4.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Figure 5:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Practitioner input at each rehabilitation stage<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is imperative, however, that at each phase of the rehabilitation process all stakeholders monitor and review progress. Not just at the time of planned return to performance.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Smaller, regular meetings between the physiotherapist and S&amp;C coach both with and without the athlete are needed, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hence establishing a collaborative and effective working relationship between the two practitioners is important, to facilitate an athlete&#8217;s rehabilitation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Collaborating and best utilising the collective skillsets of the wider athlete support team is required to assist in the holistic delivery of all aspects of the athlete\u2019s return to performance programme.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The level of individual input of physiotherapists and S&amp;C practitioners varies throughout the course of the rehabilitation process but still requires a close and effective working relationship at all stages for effective athlete injury management.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Acknowledgements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thank you to the ACPSEM (@physiosinsport) in supporting this blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Competing Interests &#8211; None<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jake Mulley BSc (Hons), MCSP, ACPSEM Bronze Accreditation.
